College basketball roundup: Richmond men upsets No. 10 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Blake Francis and Nathan Cayo powered Richmond to the program’s first road victory over an Associated Press top-10 team, rallying in the second half to beat No. 10 Kentucky 76-64 Sunday.

The Spiders (2-0) had been 0-25 against top 10 teams and trailed 36-30 just after halftime. Francis and Cayo each finished with 18 points, many coming during a series of small scoring runs that pushed Richmond ahead.

A 9-0 burst gave the Spiders the lead, and a 7-0 stretch made it 58-46 with 7:43 remaining. In between, Francis and Tyler Burton hit 3-pointers and Cayo converted a three-point play.

Kentucky (1-1) got within eight before Richmond answered with Jacob Gilyard’s fast-break layup and Matt Grace’s 3-pointer for a 13-point edge with 4:40 left. Francis added a 3-pointer that made it 72-56 and sparked a celebration on the Spiders’ bench.

(23) OHIO STATE 74, UMASS-LOWELL 64: Duane Washington Jr. scored 21 points and the Buckeyes (2-0) had to rally from a second-half deficit to defeat the River Hawks (1-2) in Columbus, Ohio.

Washington took a pass from teammate C.J. Walker and hit a 3 from the left wing for a 70-63 lead with 1:07 left to all but clinch it for the Buckeyes (2-0).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(5) LOUISVILLE 101, EASTERN KENTUCKY 58: Hailey Van Lith scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (2-0) to a win in their home opener over the Colonels (0-2) .

The Cardinals (2-0) used a 16-2 run to start the second quarter, take a 35-14 lead with 5:17 left in the half and put the game away. They would lead by as much as 40-16 in the half.

(7) ARIZONA 76, NORTHERN ARIZONA 63: Cate Reese scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Aari McDonald added 18 points and the Wildcats  opened their season with a 76-63 victory over the Lumberjacks (1-1) in Tuscon, Arizona.

McDonald, a preseason AP All-America selection, scored in double figures for a 67th straight game, which is the nation’s longest active streak. She made just 6 of 17 of her shots but finished with eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals.

Michigan State upsets No. 8 Northwestern, ending its undefeated season and College Football Playoff hopes

michigan-state-northwestern-2020.jpg
USATSI

No. 8 Northwestern’s hopes of making College Football Playoff were already slim entering Saturday, but they’re just about nonexistent now. The Wildcats fell to Michigan State 29-20 on Saturday afternoon, falling from the ranks of the unbeaten to 5-1 on the season.

Northwestern got off to a slow start in the game, and it doomed the Wildcats in the end. They drove 41 yards on their opening possession and entered the red zone but turned the ball over on downs rather than attempting a field goal. Michigan State responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Nailor two plays later to take a 7-0 lead.

After a Northwestern turnover on its next possession, Michigan State got a field goal to go up 10-0 and had a 17-6 lead at halftime. The Wildcats battled back in the second half, taking a 20-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Michigan State added two more field goals — including the go-ahead kick with under 4 minutes to go — to reclaim the lead. A fumble return touchdown in the game’s final second provided the nine-point margin.

The good news for Northwestern is this loss does not eliminate it from Big Ten title contention. The Wildcats still hold first place in the Big Ten West and can reach the conference championship game. The problem now? If Northwestern doesn’t face No. 4 Ohio State for the Big Ten title (which became less likely with another Ohio State game being canceled this week), a win over Indiana at the end of the season likely wouldn’t be enough to convince the CFP Selection Committee that the Wildcats are one of the four best teams in the country.

Northwestern has two regular-season games remaining — at Minnesota next week before finishing against rival Illinois on Dec. 12.

College football odds, picks for Week 13 in Big 12: Iowa State upsets Texas on road to conference title game

The Big 12’s playoff picture is dim, but not non-existent. It rests solely on No. 11 Oklahoma. But first the Sooners need to win out. That won’t be easy. In fact, the top four teams with the most realistic shots to win the league are all 6-2 or 5-2. As such, the final two, maybe three weeks of the season could yield several possibilities.

It won’t be worth getting into all of them now, but there is one game taking center stage this weekend that will shape the race: Friday’s noon ET matchup between Iowa State and Texas. For the Cyclones, it’s the first of two tough games to end the year, and this one comes on a short week. But Iowa State has a lot going for it. It’s a top-15 defense in points per drive allowed among teams that have played at least five games. The running game is reliable. They can win using their brand of football. Texas is more of a wild card, but quarterback Sam Ehlinger leads the Big 12 with 29 total touchdowns. This is a high-stakes game with a lot to lose.

Let’s dive into the rest of the Big 12 happenings this weekend.

Big 12 picks

No. 13 Iowa State at No. 17 Texas

Latest Odds:

Longhorns
+1

This is a quick turnaround road game for the Cyclones and Texas is coming off an unexpected open week, but I think the wrong team might be favored here. Iowa State dismantled Kansas State and looks like one of the two best teams in the Big 12. A trip to Arlington, Texas, is within grasp, which would be a monumental milestone for this program. At this same time, Texas finds itself in another must-win situation. This is a compelling top-25 game to kick off the Thanksgiving weekend slate. This one could be tight, but I like the Cyclones. Pick: Iowa State +1.5

Texas Tech at No. 23 Oklahoma State

Just about everything that could have gone wrong against Oklahoma did for Oklahoma State. It got behind quickly, lost quarterback Spencer Sanders to a head injury in the first quarter and was ill-equipped to mount a comeback. The Pokes need a get-right game, and I think they get it at home against the Red Raiders. Pick: Oklahoma State -10.5

Kansas State at Baylor

The team with one (1) win is favored, which should tell you how things are going at Kansas State. I don’t love betting the spread here as much as the point total (46). Kansas State and Baylor rank 96th and 100th, respectively, in points per drive. First one to 20 wins? Pick: Under 46

TCU at Kansas

Latest Odds:

Horned Frogs
-24

There are a couple of conflicting ideologies at play. Weird things tend to happen when TCU visits Kansas. At the same time, the Jayhawks are abysmal against the spread. Everyone has blown them out, so overs are usually in play with them as a result. TCU, however, just scored six

College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, Week 12: Georgia, Cincinnati, Oregon avoid upsets

No. 13 Georgia returned to the field Saturday after a week off for its first game since a crushing loss to Florida two weeks ago, a defeat which all but ended Georgia’s hopes of an SEC Championship Game or College Football Playoff appearance. But the Bulldogs found something for their fans to get excited about on Saturday in a 31-24 win over Mississippi State.

Though it took a fourth-down stop in the final two minutes for Georgia to secure the win, Kirby Smart’s team appeared to finally find a quarterback as USC transfer JT Daniels completed 28 of 38 passes for 401 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in his SEC debut. Georgia needed every bit of the redshirt sophomore’s production as it generated just 8 rushing yards against a shorthanded Mississippi State team.

Daniels will be draft-eligible after this season, but if he stays in college another season after missing nearly all of last year with a knee injury suffered at USC, he could be a long-term answer for the Bulldogs at the position. If nothing else, Daniels’ successful return to the field was one of the top storylines on another action-packed Saturday of college football.

College football roundup: South Carolina upsets No. 15 Auburn

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Kevin Harris ran for two touchdowns and South Carolina turned three interceptions thrown by Bo Nix into points to defeat No. 15 Auburn for the first time in 87 years with a 30-22 victory on Saturday.

The Tigers (2-2 Southeastern Conference) had won eight straight in the series and jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. But Nix, the sophomore quarterback, threw three picks and the Gamecocks (2-2) cashed in each time to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a year.

Shi Smith had eight catches including a 10-yard TD grab midway through the third quarter and put South Carolina ahead for good, 20-19.

Auburn was driving on its following series when Nix threw his third interception — and second to cornerback Jaycee Horn who brought the ball down the left sidelines to the Tigers’ 8. Harris was in the end zone a play later for a 27-19 lead and Auburn could not recover.

The Tigers closed to 30-22 on Anders Carlson’s 22 yard field goal with 6:39 left. Auburn got the ball back once more with 2:15 left and drove to the South Carolina 13. Nix, though, was called for intentional grounding trying to avoid a sack and the Gamecocks held on to beat the Tigers for the first time since 1933.

Kentucky 34, No. 18 Tennessee 7

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Kelvin Joseph and Jami Davis returned interceptions for touchdowns in the first half and Kentucky shut out No. 18 Tennessee in the second half.

It was Kentucky’s first win in Neyland Stadium since 1984, the Wildcats’ largest margin of victory in Knoxville since 56-0 in 1893 and their most lopsided victory in the series since 1935.

After getting six interceptions and allowing only a safety against Mississippi State last week, Kentucky (2-2) picked off three passes against the Vols (2-2).

Tennessee has now followed up an eight-game winning streak with a two-game losing streak.

Joseph’s 41-yard touchdown and Davis’ 85-yard return — both off interceptions thrown by Jarrett Guarantano — helped put Kentucky up 17-0 in the second quarter.

No. 13 Miami, Pittsburgh 19

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — D’Eriq King threw four touchdown passes for Miami in its win over Pittsburgh.

Will Mallory caught two of King’s scoring passes as the Hurricanes (4-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) bounced back from a 42-17 loss at top-ranked Clemson last week.

The Panthers (3-3, 2-3) lost their third straight and were without senior quarterback Kenny Pickett, who suffered an ankle injury against Boston College last week. Pickett leads the nation with 1,389 passing yards but didn’t travel with the team to South Florida.

Redshirt freshman Joey Yellen replaced Pickett, completing 22 of 46 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Kessman kicked four field goals for the Panthers and became Pitt’s all-time leader with 57. Kessman surpassed Chris Blewitt, who had 55 field goals from 2013-16.
