DOD Awards $50 Million in University Research Equipment Awards > U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE > Release

The Department of Defense (DOD) has announced awards to 150 university researchers totaling $50 million under the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).  These grants will be provided to 85 institutions across 33 states in Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. 

DOD has long championed the country’s scientific ecosystem.  Through DURIP, the department supports purchases of major research equipment to augment current and develop new capabilities.  This effort enables universities to perform state-of-the-art research that boosts the United States’ technological edge, while ensuring that our future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce remains second to none.  This year, the awards will support equipment and instrumentation to accelerate basic research, which is relevant across the department to include quantum sciences, materials design, development, and characterization, machine learning, hypersonics, and more.  

“DURIP awards help maintain the cutting-edge capabilities of our universities and provide research infrastructure to enable the most creative scientific minds in the country to extend the boundaries of science and technology,” said Dr. Bindu Nair, Director, Basic Research Office, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.  “The awards will facilitate scientific advances that will drive unparalleled military capabilities for our country and help train our future STEM workforce.”

The annual DURIP award process is highly competitive.  The program is administered through a merit competition jointly by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, and Office of Naval Research.  The Department seeks specific proposals from university investigators conducting foundational science and engineering research relevant to national defense. 

For the FY 2021 competition, the Service research offices received 742 proposals requesting $297 million in total funding.  Selections made by the Service research offices are subject to successful completion of negotiations with the academic institutions.

College Football Playoff rankings release time, channel to watch second 2020 CFP selection show

Decisions aren’t getting easier anytime soon for the College Football Playoff selection committee.

As its second set of 2020 rankings are unveiled Tuesday night, the landscape of Playoff contenders remains complicated by COVID-19 cancelations and vastly different strengths of schedule. Ohio State, one of the teams named in the initial top four last week, couldn’t suit up against Illinois because of a coronavirus outbreak. USC, the last remaining Pac 12 squad with any hope of a Playoff appearance, might struggle to complete six games this year as the West Coast buckles down for a surge of hospitalizations and subsequent shutdowns.

Cincinnati and BYU, meanwhile, might not get a crack at the Playoff even if they go unbeaten through nine-plus contests.

For now, the expected pecking order includes Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Clemson in some order. But if one of those teams loses before the end of the season, the field would plunge into complete chaos.

That’s why the weekly CFP rankings are interesting beyond the top four. With each update, the committee lays out a roadmap for what it intends to do if one of the best teams falters. It telegraphs which programs it will likely believe in come the Dec. 20 final selections and which ones it might snub.

Shanghai Normal University Establishes Digital Humanities Research Center to Promote Chinese DH Research and Education – Press Release

On November 23, 2020, the International Summit Forum on Digital Humanities and the Opening Ceremony of Digital Humanities Research Center of Shanghai Normal University (SHNUDH) was held in Xuhui campus of Shanghai Normal University. College Football Playoff to Release First Rankings of a Chaotic Season

“The one that’s probably most significant in everyone’s mind is the lack of those marquee intersectional games,” Hancock said. “Just look back at the games that were important to the committee through the years — Notre Dame-Georgia, the two Oklahoma-Ohio State games, Oregon-Auburn — and the committee won’t have that this year.”

Among the planned games this year that were lost: Alabama-Southern California, Ohio State at Oregon and a Wisconsin-Notre Dame showdown at Lambeau Field.

That’s right.

“It’s in the discretion of each of the 13 members, and keep in mind no one knows how many games any team will play this season,” Hancock said. “Each individual member considers what’s most important to him or her. People talk about the committee as a singular unit; really, it’s plural: It’s 13 members making individual decisions.”

Although conferences have imposed requirements for teams to reach league championships, the committee has no threshold for how many games a team must play to be eligible for the playoff.

“The number of games and wins by each team is certainly important in weighing its ranking, but it is not the only factor,” the Playoff said on its website. The Playoff added, “The more games played, the more chances a team has to prove itself to the committee.”

Not this year, at least. But it could certainly be bigger in future seasons.

Gary Barta, the athletic director at Iowa, leads the selection committee. Other members include the athletic directors at Arkansas State, Colorado, Florida, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and Wyoming, as well as a professor at Arizona. Ken Hatfield, who led the football programs at Air Force, Arkansas, Clemson and Rice, is a member, as is R.C. Slocum, who coached Texas A&M.

Ronnie Lott, the former Southern California star, and John Urschel, who played at Penn State, sit on the panel. Raymond T. Odierno, the retired general who was the U.S. Army chief of staff, is also a member.

The Most Important Question

Does this really deserve a press release? A press release highlights the story. It’s newsworthy and contains information with wide audience appeal. It probably isn’t about your brand, and it isn’t geared toward a niche market segment. It also has facts, figures, findings and a hook

Press release-worthy events include breaking industry news, an industry or community event, or the launch of a new product or service. They can also the publication of original research, winning a prestigious award, partnering with another company on a project, a change in your executive staff or even sometimes company rebranding.

If you don’t have these things, then you probably don’t have a press release. 

The Big Three

A great press release starts with a strong, attention-grabbing subject line, an opening paragraph that summarizes the subject and language that cuts to the chase (this isn’t creative writing).

Many press releases are skipped after a simple glance at the subject line. To write a subject line that will get your email opened, you should personalize when possible. Be casual but professional, and avoid tired attention-grabbing tactics like all caps, exaggerated claims and emoticons.

The Power Of Paragraph One

The first paragraph needs to contain the most important information because chances are your audience is only going to skim the rest. If there are current statistics or recent findings that support the subject of your press release, get them in the first paragraph. It’s easier to skim, so use bullet points of key takeaways to make the press release easier to read and to hold your audience’s interest. 

The Background Work

You’re more likely to create a mutually beneficial, ongoing relationship with the press if you’re viewed as a credible source. Always source your facts and statistics using credible citations because it makes it easy to check the validity of your claims. It also saves journalists and your general audience time and builds a reputation of credibility.

If you’re the source of the data, make that clear, and briefly define how your facts and numbers came about.
