When the pandemic hit in March, sporting events around the world were canceled or postponed. College football games on CBS Sports Network — Watch Louisiana Tech vs. North Texas live stream, TV channel

Buffalo jumped into the driver’s seat in the MAC’s East division with a 70-41 win over Kent State last week and will look to stay there on Saturday when the Bulls play at Ohio in one of six games on CBS Sports Network this weekend. But the 2-1 Bobcats should have a pretty good idea of how to slow Buffalo down, because it’s a recipe that has worked for them the past two seasons. It’s all about stopping Jaret Patterson.

A junior running back coming off a 1,799-yard season, Patterson made his name known around the country last week when he tied an FBS record with eight rushing touchdowns against Kent State. In all, he finished with 409 yards on the ground, falling just short of another FBS record. But in two career games against Ohio, Patterson has run for just 75 yards on 21 carries.

The Bobcats will be looking to replicate that success against Patterson and get back into contention for the league title. With a 2-1 record, Ohio is just a three-point loss to Central Michigan away from being 3-0, and beating a Buffalo team that is enjoying the national spotlight would make quite a statement. That matchup is just one of the storylines that will be at play on CBS Sports Network during week 14 of the college football season.

North Texas vs. Louisiana Tech

Date: Thursday, Dec. 3 | Time: 6 p.m. ET
Location: Apogee Stadium — Denton, Texas
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: After playing seven straight weeks to open the season, Louisiana Tech (4-3) has been off since Oct. 31. The hiatus has cost them two key playmakers, as leading receiver Adrian Hardy and veteran Justen Henderson have opted out of the season’s final stretch. The Mean Green (3-4) dealt with a three-week break of their own and are 1-1 since.

Air Force vs. Utah State

Date: Thursday, Dec. 3 | Time: 9:30 p.m. ET
Location: Maverik Stadium — Logan, Utah
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: Both teams beat New Mexico in their most recent game, so they should be able to use film from those games to get a reasonable gauge of what to expect. For Utah State, it was the first win in a season that’s already featured a coaching change. Co-defensive coordinator Frank Maile is two games into his stint as interim coach following Gary Andersen’s departure. Things have been a bit more stable at Air Force, where the Falcons are 2-2, including a huge 40-7 win over rival Navy in the opener.

UNLV vs. Boise State

Date: Friday, Dec. 4 | Time: 9:30 p.m. ET
Location: Allegiant Stadium — Las Vegas, Nevada
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: The Broncos are 4-1 with their only loss coming to BYU when they were without their top two quarterbacks. So, in essence,

What to look for when betting on college basketball games, like Kansas vs. Kentucky, early in the season

Hey, welcome to your Tuesday afternoon. Before we get into today’s news and picks, I’d like to publicly thank the man who writes the morning version of this newsletter, Pete Blackburn. Pete led off this morning’s newsletter with the sentence, “welcome to December!”

Reading that sentence this morning was the moment when I realized it was December. Where does the time go? I swear, it feels like it was only yesterday when I could go outside and be amongst other people without the crippling fear that they were all capable of killing me just by saying “hello” a little too closely.

Anyway, hi! It’s December! I hope you’re enjoying your first day of the final month of this disaster of a year. I have been. I’ve been watching Champions League soccer on CBS All Access, and not just because I get it for free as a CBS employee. Tonight, I’ll be watching college basketball as there are a couple of substantial top 20 matchups for us on tap, and I have picks for both below. What I won’t be watching tonight is the Steelers and Ravens because, as you no doubt know by now, that game was postponed for roughly the tenth time in the last few days and will now be played on Wednesday afternoon.

I do not have a play for that game for you. I’m sorry, but I have no idea who is even playing in it, making it extremely difficult to handicap. If you absolutely have to bet on something, do what I do when I’m bored and just take the under. It’s not an awful strategy, honestly.

Anyway, before we get to the bets I sincerely recommend we catch up on today’s proceedings.

OK, let’s make some money.

🔥 The Hot Ticket

No. 7 Kansas vs. No. 20 Kentucky, 9:30 p.m. | TV: ESPN
The Pick: Under 143 (-110)
: As I’ve been telling you in this newsletter, I don’t like betting college basketball early in the season as much as I do later in the year. We tend to have a better idea of what teams are after a few games. We aren’t there yet, but thankfully, I have some things I do look for early in the year. I want neutral site games because the under tends to be a good play in them, and I think this happens to be one of the better values on the board tonight.

Have you noticed that while Kentucky continues to send players to the NBA, the Wildcats don’t have as many lottery picks as they used to? There’s a reason for it. In recent seasons, the NBA has become a league of shooting and … Kentucky can’t shoot very well and. Tyler Herro is the one Kentucky player to be taken in the last three drafts to

After three games, there is some clarity on Boston College men’s basketball

They have a load of decent guards in Wynston Tabbs, Jay Heath, Makai Ashton-Langford, DeMarr Langford, and Rich Kelly. They’ve been aggressive in their approach, forcing the action on offense and hunting for turnovers on defense.

Tabbs, who missed the last season and a half with a knee injury, has shown he can fulfill the potential of his freshman year two seasons ago … in spots. It’s logical that it would take him some time to get back to full capability, so patience is called for.

Heath is a steady influence who will be a solid player for his career. In three games, he hasn’t shown he’s advanced to a higher level.

Ashton-Langford seems fearless and capable of some athletic plays that many others can’t make. His younger brother is physically mature and obviously has potential.

Kelly, a graduate transfer from Quinnipiac, adds experience, but I don’t like how the ball sticks with him at times. More passing and cutting and less dribbling would be good for him because coach Jim Christian is giving him a lot of time.

The loss to St. John’s seemed to portend what the season could be like. This group hasn’t played together enough, and for a while St. John’s overwhelmed them with a furious pace, taking a 20-point lead in the second half. Then talent and grit took hold and the Eagles rallied, but they ran out of time.

There are going to be nights when the perimeter group looks great, and others when they fail to mesh.

The big problem is up front. Steffon Mitchell is an outstanding defensive player and a hustler. However, he stands alone. It’s going to be tough to contend with taller teams in league play.

In Bubbleville, the Eagles were outrebounded in two of the games and basically broke even with Rhode Island. Forward C.J. Felder tends to drift to the arc; he’s not a banger or a player that’s going to defend strongly in the paint.

The conclusion: I’m not sure the depth on the perimeter is enough to translate into enough victories in the ACC. Maybe by the second half of the season the Eagles will establish a style of play with their glut of guards that forces opponents to react to them rather than the opposite and that will pay off.

Lowell’s wild adventures: UMass Lowell has been dealing with the effects of the pandemic a lot, starting with a 14-day quarantine in November. Then a game vs. Florida, scheduled at Mohegan Sun, was canceled when the Gators had a positive test. Bubbleville organizers told UMass Lowell coach Pat Duquette to still come to Connecticut; they’d find a new opponent.

“First they said Towson,” said Duquette. “Then, a half-hour before we hopped on the bus to go down there, they said, ‘We’ve got to change your opponent.’ We waited to hear and they said San Francisco.”

The River Hawks were tested for COVID-19 as soon as they arrived at Mohegan Sun, then went

College basketball schedule 2020-21: Vanderbilt latest to postpone or cancel games due to COVID-19

bubbleville-norlander.jpg

The college basketball season got underway Wednesday, but it’s already faced a few snags. Some teams have already been forced to postpone, cancel or reschedule matchups because of COVID-19 outbreaks, and some multi-team events are taking hits as well.

Oklahoma announced Wednesday it is pausing activities due to COVID-19 tests and contact tracing and postponed the Sooners’ opener that night vs. UTSA and their game Saturday at UCF.

The most notable team directly affected this week is Duke, which was expected to open its season Wednesday against Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb, though, had a positive COVID-19 test within its program, and Duke has opted to postpone the game. The Blue Devils will open their season on Saturday against Coppin State instead.

Elsewhere, preseason No. 2 Baylor is dealing with the virus at the top of its program. Bears coach Scott Drew announced over the weekend that he tested positive, and as a result, the Bears are out of the loaded field of the Empire Classic this week at Mohegan Sun.

Sun Bowl’s streak of 86 consecutive games coming to end

The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, played every year since Jan. 1, 1935, has been canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

KFOX14/CBS4 in El Paso, Texas, site of the game that was to pit the Pac-12 against the ACC, said it confirmed the news with the Sun Bowl Association. The Stadium first reported the cancellation of the nation’s second-longest-running bowl game.

Earlier this year, when the Pac-12 announced a return to the field, executive director Bernie Olivas said the bowl still planned on pitting a Pac-12 and ACC team.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

The bowl schedule for the 2020 season started at 43 games with the College Football Playoff championship game included. Seven games have officially announced cancellations – Redbox, Hawaii, Bahamas, Holiday, Quick Lane, Pinstripe and Sun. Two games were moved – the New Mexico Bowl will be played in Frisco, Texas, and the inaugural Fenway Bowl scheduled for Boston has moved to Montgomery, Alabama. The status of the Las Vegas Bowl is uncertain. If that game is not played, it would mean four games with Pac-12 tie-ins have been called off.

Minnesota-Northwestern canceled

The Big Ten is facing more challenges with COVID-19 after a weekend when two football games were canceled due to health concerns.

Minnesota announced Monday its game scheduled for Saturday against No. 17 Northwestern has been canceled and will be considered a no contest. The Gophers had last week’s game against Wisconsin shut down. It will be the first time since 1906 the border rivals will not play.

Minnesota said team activities remained paused after being halted Tuesday. The team’s next scheduled game is Dec. 12 at Nebraska.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff continues to be our main priority,” Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle said in a statement. “The last couple of days have shown a decrease in positive cases, but not to the point where we are able to return to competition. We are disappointed not to be able to compete against Northwestern on Saturday, but we need to continue to focus on following all CDC and MDH guidelines and slow the spread of the virus.”

Michigan-Maryland game in doubt

Michigan announced Monday its football program is pausing activities because of health concerns related to presumptive positive tests.

Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said the program has seen a rise in presumptive positive tests.

“That’s an increased number from zero,” Harbaugh said. “It was more than one. It was a few. So it was increased.”

Harbaugh declined to predict whether the Wolverines would play this Saturday against Maryland.

“This is day to day,” Harbaugh said. “When the results come back, we’ll monitor those results and as always continue to be very proactive.”

College Football Bowls 2020-21: Predicting Top Games After Week 14 AP Poll | Bleacher Report

0 of 3

    John Raoux/Associated Press

Little changed this week atop both of college football’s major polls, and that’s likely to continue in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings.

Three of the top four teams—Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson—won comfortably. But for Ohio State, Saturday’s cancellation against Illinois because of COVID-19-related roster issues not only cost the Buckeyes a game, but it could also cost them a chance to play in the Big Ten Championship Game. According to the league’s guidelines for this pandemic-shortened season, teams eligible for the title game must play six of their eight scheduled games.

The Buckeyes have played just four, with remaining games against Michigan and Michigan State on the schedule. If they are forced to cancel either of those, they will be short of the requirement, and it’s hard to see the College Football Playoff committee selecting a team into the top four that has played fewer than six games and wasn’t in its conference title game over teams like Florida or Texas A&M.

For now, it’s hard to see Ohio State not suiting up for the final two games with all of that at stake, but it will be the sport’s biggest storyline as bowl season approaches.

    Fiesta Bowl: USC vs. Indiana

Cotton Bowl: Iowa State vs. Texas A&M

    Orange Bowl: Florida vs. Miami

    Peach Bowl: Cincinnati vs. Georgia

We barely knew ye, Northwestern. The Wildcats landed at No. 8 in the first 2020 College Football Playoff rankings released. Five days later, they fell in a shocking upset to unranked Michigan State, just about dashing any hopes they had of making a New Year’s Six bowl. Indiana, meanwhile, still has a path into the NY6, though a matchup with a ranked Wisconsin team with eyes on that bid awaits Saturday. The winner of that matchup is in prime position for a New Year’s trip to the desert.

Barring any major upsets, the other three NY6 games are likely to stand as above. Iowa State survived its toughest remaining test by squeaking out a close win over Texas and only has a meeting with West Virginia standing in the way of a rematch with Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. The winner of that is likely to face former Big 12 rival Texas A&M at the Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington, Texas.

The Orange Bowl could feature one of college football’s most bitter rivalries between Miami and Florida, which was discontinued as a regular game in the 2000s. The Gators’ only hopes for the CFP—outside of beating Alabama in the SEC Championship Game—are for Ohio State to fall out of the top four or for Clemson to lose in a rematch with Notre Dame in the ACC title game.

Georgia hasn’t been impressive this year, but the Bulldogs are still inside the CFP top 10, and as long as they win out, it’s hard to see anyone making a big jump over them. They don’t have

College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, schedule, games today: Texas A&M vs. LSU, Georgia in action

After two straight weeks off, Clemson is returning to the field Saturday with something to prove. The Tigers sit at No. 3 in the College Football Playoff Rankings and can ill-afford a lackluster performance against Pittsburgh with No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 6 Florida also in action Saturday as the race for CFP positioning heats up.

The 7-1 Tigers might have their hands full with a Panthers team that improved to 5-4 with a 47-14 thrashing of Virginia Tech last week. If Clemson slips up, the Aggies or Gators could be ready to slide into the playoff picture. Texas A&M is seeking revenge for last year’s 50-7 loss to LSU, while No. 6 Florida will be looking to to keep its offense rolling against a Kentucky team that gave up 63 points to Alabama last week. Meanwhile, No. 7 Cincinnati should have no trouble against Temple but will be looking to make an impression on the CFP committee with its play on the field.
