World’s first graduate-level AI university appoints world-renowned academic Eric Xing as President

Ranked as one of the top computer science professors worldwide, Professor Dr. Xing joins MBZUAI from Carnegie Mellon University in the US, where he most recently served as Associate Department Head of Research at the Machine Learning Department, part of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science. Additionally, he is the Founding Director of the Center for Machine Learning and Health, Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Professor Dr. Xing is also the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Scientist of Petuum, Inc, which has raised over $120 million funding since 2016 and was selected as a 2018 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.

McEldrew Young Partner Eric L. Young Named “Lawyer of the Year” for 2020 by the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The law firm of McEldrew Young Purtell Merritt is pleased to announce that its co-founder and name partner, Eric L. Young, was honored as one of two “Lawyers of the Year” for 2020 at the 20th Annual Conference & Awards Ceremony of the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund (“TAF”).  TAF also named James E. Miller of Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLP, as a recipient of the award. TAF is the nation’s preeminent organization dedicated to combatting fraud against the government and advocating for stronger whistleblower protections. It also serves as a significant resource for whistleblowers and their attorneys who bring actions under the federal and state False Claims Acts, as well as the whistleblower programs of the IRS, SEC and CFTC.

Mr. Young and Mr. Miller were honored for their groundbreaking work representing three whistleblowers in two successful qui tam False Claims Act cases against two of the nation’s largest drug manufacturers − Novartis and Teva. Both cases were hard-fought and required substantial investments of time and resources for both law firms. In total, more than 100 depositions were taken across the nation, and over $6 million were advanced for expert fees and investigatory expenses in both cases.

Young and Miller’s work leading up the settlement in United States ex rel. Bilotta v. Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Corp., No. 11-CV-00071 (S.D.N.Y.) spanned more than a decade and was based on a qui tam complaint alleging that the drug maker violated the False Claims Act and the Anti-Kickback Statute by paying unlawful kickbacks to doctors who prescribed one of nine different cardiovascular drugs.

According to the allegations in the complaint, Novartis provided incentives to physicians, such as cash, meals, alcohol, hotels, travel and entertainment, as part of a sham speaker program that was in place at the company from 2002 to 2011.  At many of these speaking engagements, it was alleged that doctors were not required to make presentations, and there was typically minimal discussion about medical issues. As part of the settlement, Novartis entered into a corporate integrity agreement with the government which, among other things, placed strict limits on future remuneration paid to speakers as well as the amount of funding that could be allocated to speaker training programs.

Likewise, TAF recognized Young and Miller’s trailblazing work in an alleged kickback case against Teva Pharmaceuticals. The settlement in United States ex rel. Arnstein and Senousy v. Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., No. 1:13-cv-03702 (S.D.N.Y.) was also based on allegations that the pharmaceutical company paid illegal kickbacks to doctors as an incentive to write prescriptions for two drugs that treated multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Notably, the government declined to intervene in this case and Young and Miller’s firms proceeded to litigate the case to a successful conclusion. Case Western Reserve University selects Eric W. Kaler as new president

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Former University of Minnesota President Eric W. Kaler has been named the new Case Western Reserve University.

“Our university’s growing momentum attracted an exceptional pool of candidates,” Board Chair Fred DiSanto said in a news release. “But Eric’s unique combination of intellect, accomplishments, and authenticity ultimately made him our unanimous choice to become Case Western Reserve’s next president.”

Kaler will replace Barbara Snyder, CWRU’s first woman president, who in her 12-year tenure eliminated a $19-million deficit, added campus buildings and helped raise $1.82 billion in donations to its “Thinking Forward” capital plan. Snyder will lead the American Association of Universities.

An accomplished chemical engineer, Kaler led the the University of Minnesota with unprecedented growth in research, fundraising and graduation rates. He was also part of the research progress that led to a state partnership known as MnDRIVE (Minnesota Discovery, Research, and InnoVation Economy). Kaler holds 10 patents and has been published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. He is also a member and fellow of several academies including the National Academy of Engineering.

The $18 million program helped to fund research areas that aligned with industry needs and statewide challenges. Topics included robotics and advanced manufacturing, the environment, treatments for brain conditions, and, later, a statewide clinical trials network for cancer (which added $4 million per year to the allocation).

Initially, Kaler didn’t want to leave the area after stepping down as president in 2019. But after learning more about CWU, he became intrigued.

“There is a tremendous fit,” Kaler said. “Once I looked, I got more excited… [and thought] I’m really made for this job.”

David McMillan, a current regent and former chair of its board, attributes Kaler’s success in launching MnDRIVE and other initiatives were two primary factors.

“He had that kind of big-picture vision,” McMillan said in a news release.

Kaler is married to his wife, Karen, and has two adult sons —Charlie and Sam— and a nearly 4-year-old granddaughter, Ophelia.

1. Why are running for Board of Education?

If working in higher education has taught me anything, it’s that education is one of the keys to a better life. We all want the best for our children, and while we can’t control the world around us, what we can do is make sure our children have all the tools they need to be successful and happy.

Today’s world has shown us that we have to be able to adjust and adapt to ever changing and unpredictable circumstances. All the decisions made by our schools now can have lasting impacts on our children in the future. The mission of any educational institution, whether they serve kindergarten or graduate students, is to ensure that those students succeed and that they receive the best education possible. Professionally, I am guided by that mission every day. As a member of the school board, I would be able to apply that mission to our children and ensure that they all, no matter their background or needs, receive the high-quality education they deserve.

2. What are your qualifications for this position?

I have worked in higher education for most of my professional life. I began my career as an attorney, but soon after that I transitioned into higher education. I have held various positions across 4- and 2-year institutions, both public and private, and am currently the Chief Information Officer at Union County College.

3. The single most pressing issue facing our school district is ____ and this is what I intend to do about it:

In my opinion, in both the short and long term, the COVID pandemic is going to be the biggest challenge we face as board members and parents. In the short term, the obvious issue of getting our children back in school safely full time while also maintaining safety for school staff is a monumental challenge. I know many parents, including myself, and teachers are struggling with this remote/hybrid learning environment, and our children are struggling to adapt as well. I believe it is crucial that students return to the classroom because there is no substitute for face to face instruction. I know in our current environment that is difficult, and I appreciate the health and safety concerns in-class instruction brings. At the college level schools are struggling with trying to bring students back and keep everyone safe, and that is no easy task. I’m not suggesting I have all the answers, but there must
