Louisville became the latest high-profile college basketball program to pause activities due to issues with COVID-19 on Thursday night, when the school announced an indefinite halt after someone in the program tested positive for COVID-19. The Cardinals are off to a 4-0 start, but their game against UNC Greensboro on Friday will be canceled. Louisville is next scheduled to play Dec. 9 against No. 4 Wisconsin.

The school has not determined if that game will be affected by the COVID-19 issues in the program. Louisville is far from the only program to be hit with scheduling problems related to the coronavirus this season. The Energy 202: In an unusual move, Trump administration will protect a pine tree due to climate change

Granting federal protections to the tree is a “watershed decision,” said Diana Tomback, professor of integrative biology at the University of Colorado at Denver who has studied the tree for decades.

The whitebark pine’s habitat spans over 80 million acres across seven states and Canada. In its official filing, the agency acknowledged that rising temperatures are pushing the high-elevation tree’s habitat up to higher altitudes, hurting the chances of survival for a pine whose nutritious seeds provide sustenance for everything from red squirrels to black bears.

“It’s found over the largest geographic area of any other tree listed,” she added.

The decision to declare the tree endangered due to climate change is an unusual one for an administration that often dismisses that threat.

“It tells you how significant and obvious the threat is,” said Rebecca Riley, legal director of the nature program at the Natural Resources Defense Council, which first petitioned for the pine to be protected in 2008.

The tree is also a key food source for grizzlies that raid pine seeds stored by squirrels when bulking up for winter. Giving threatened status to the pine could complicate efforts to remove grizzly bears around Yellowstone National Park from the endangered species list.

In 2017, wildlife officials said the bear had recovered. But a federal judge in Montana reversed that decision the following year.

The listing may also have implications for loggers who would have to work around the protected pine on U.S. Forest Service land. About 88 percent of the tree’s range in the United States is on land managed by the federal government.

Several other factors weigh against the long-term survival of the species.

The trees are vulnerable to a foreign fungal infection, which took root in North America a century ago, as well as to native beetles that burrow into the bark of pine trees.

And more frequent and ferocious fires — themselves fueled by climate change — are also scorching the pine and its habitat.

Declaring a species endangered without designating critical habitat for it is “just inconsistent with the Endangered Species Act,” said Riley with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

But the Fish and Wildlife Service said doing so was “not prudent” in this case because “the primary stressor” for the pine is the fungus — not habitat loss.

“A cynical view might be that they pushed this listing forward to dictate how this listing happens,” said Noah Greenwald, endangered species director at the Center for Biological Diversity, noting that Joe Biden will become president next month.

Power plays

Trump is looking to support mining through a loan program the administration had previously tried to nix.

The Energy Department announced Tuesday that it would give preference to projects involving the mining of critical minerals for an existing loan program meant for clean energy. The move is part of a broad push by the Trump administration to expand domestic production of minerals such as lithium, chromium, cobalt, helium and vanadium, Bloomberg News reports.

“The loan program

Spring semester classes will remain virtual at Huston-Tillotson University due to coronavirus pandemic

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Citing ongoing health concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic, classes for the upcoming spring semester will remain virtual for students at Huston-Tillotston University in Austin.

The university’s president and CEO, Colette Pierce Burnette, made that announcement Monday in a letter sent to the school community. She wrote that the university based its decision on scientific advice about the expected surge in cases and deaths as well as the anticipated release of a vaccine for the general public next year.

“The safety and health of the entire campus community remain paramount as our top priority,” Pierce Brunette wrote. “Please understand that the decision to be fully online was by no means an easy one. Unfortunately, the key factors leading to our decision for the fall term are still prevalent, and in some cases, even more daunting. Continuing with fully online teaching and learning is the best decision for our campus.”

She reminded students about the online support services that remain available to them during the next semester, including one-on-one virtual tutoring and emergency grants.

Pierce Burnette also shared Huston-Tillotson University will soon provide what she called a “persistence grant” to registered students. She said this will help them with “costs of obtaining an education during such a tumultuous time.” More information will be released later this week, she wrote.

Huston-Tillotson Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Wayne Knox said his team was monitoring the effects of the pandemic is having on Black and brown communities, in particular. Seeing a continued increase in cases, plus a vaccine forecasted to be distributed to the general public in the spring, at best, the decision was made to go fully virtual.

“We just did not feel comfortable running the risk of having a surge here on campus,” Knox said.

“Continuing with teaching and learning virtually for the spring semester is a crucial step in keeping us healthy, stopping the spread, and defeating the virus so we can all be together soon,” Pierce Burnette said in her letter. “Please remain vigilant in protecting yourselves and your loved ones from the spread of COVID-19 — wear your mask, wash your hands, avoid crowds, and maintain a safe distance.”

Huston-Tillotson junior English student Dymon Moore said she misses the camaraderie and fellowship with students on campus, but feels thankful the school is being proactive to minimize harmful risk of transmitting COVID-19 among the population.

“It shows that the school is taking the pandemic seriously. They are valuing their staff and faculty health. They are valuing their students health,” Moore said.

Knox said there may be a drop in enrollment, but he doesn’t believe it will be substantial. He said the University, which has held its spot in Austin for nearly a century and a half, isn’t going anywhere.

“With us being here for 145 years, we have weathered storms before. We will weather this one, as well,” Knox said.

Other local higher education institutions are announcing changes for the spring semester because of the ongoing pandemic.

The deadline had been sent to expire on Monday.

The UC said shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday that, “The UC Application is currently experiencing an outage. We are investigating how to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.”

The system said less than an hour later, “Due to the technical difficulties that many were experiencing on Nov. 29, the deadline for the UC Application has been extended to 11:59 p.m. PST, Friday, Dec. 4.”

Although the novel coronavirus has forced campuses in the UC system to offer most classes online this fall, the system has been experiencing growth, particularly UC San Diego, which recently surpassed the 40,000 mark in enrollment for the first time.

College basketball schedule 2020-21: Vanderbilt latest to postpone or cancel games due to COVID-19

bubbleville-norlander.jpg
Matt Norlander / CBS Sports

The college basketball season got underway Wednesday, but it’s already faced a few snags. Some teams have already been forced to postpone, cancel or reschedule matchups because of COVID-19 outbreaks, and some multi-team events are taking hits as well.

Oklahoma announced Wednesday it is pausing activities due to COVID-19 tests and contact tracing and postponed the Sooners’ opener that night vs. UTSA and their game Saturday at UCF.

The most notable team directly affected this week is Duke, which was expected to open its season Wednesday against Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb, though, had a positive COVID-19 test within its program, and Duke has opted to postpone the game. The Blue Devils will open their season on Saturday against Coppin State instead.

Elsewhere, preseason No. 2 Baylor is dealing with the virus at the top of its program. Bears coach Scott Drew announced over the weekend that he tested positive, and as a result, the Bears are out of the loaded field of the Empire Classic this week at Mohegan Sun.

As developments continue to unfold, we’ll be tracking all the latest news and notes surrounding scheduling snafus below in our tracker.

Grand Canyon to play undermanned Benedictine-Mesa after Park University goes into quarantine due to COVID-19

In the COVID-19 season, college basketball teams will have to adjust on the fly.

That’s what Grand Canyon’s men’s team is doing, filling its Saturday’ home date with Benedictine University at Mesa after Park University in Gilbert had to pause basketball activities due to the virus.

This is the season opener for Benedictine, an NAIA school that has mostly local former high school players, including former Mesa Mountain View guard Austin Denham, who averaged 14 points, starting all 29 games last season with Benedictine.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

It comes at a time when Benedictine coach Frank Woodford had allowed out-of-state players to return home to visit family during the Thanksgiving break.

“Picking up the game so late is definitely making for a unique season opener,” Woodford said. “We had actually already allowed our out-of-state students leave for the holiday before we knew about this game, so we are down a few guys simply because they had already gone home for Thanksgiving. We have another couple that had not quite finished all of their eligibility requirements that would have still had a few days next week to get squared away.

“We are very excited for the opportunity to play GCU. This year, any game we are able to play is a blessing. We were not going to be able to have any scrimmages before our first countable game, and GCU is by no means a scrimmage, but this game will allow guys to get the game feel and go against someone else before we start playing NAIA-level competition.

“We are down two starters that had already gone home for the holiday, so this will be a great opportunity for some other guys to get playing time and opportunity to show what they can do.”

Benedictine’s best available players are local: Denham, sophomore guard DJ Tate (Williams Field High), and forward Nick Sessions (Mesa Mountain View).

GCU will try to improve to 2-0 under coach Bryce Drew. On Wednesday, GCU opened the season at home with a 69-53 win over Grambling State.

Park, an NAIA school, announced in a release that it will pause all team activities for 14 days due to a positive coronavirus test within the program with the players going in quarantine.

It is the second pause for the basketball team because of COVID.

“We knew we would have to deal with this during the season,” Park coach Gordon Stubblefield said in a school press release. “But this is a resilient group. We will handle things appropriately to keep everyone safe and get after it when we can return.”

Drew realizes how flexible everybody will have to be. That’s why he quickly built depth once he arrived last spring and brought in transfers Asbjorn Midtgaard (Wichita State), Dima Zdor (Weber State) and Sean

Every Week 14 college football game postponed or canceled due to COVID-19

The College Football Playoff is right around the corner, and three weeks until the Power 5 conferences hold their respective championships.

Given the circumstances of this season, it’s been different, to say the least as programs battle COVID-19 and the protocols that come with the global pandemic.

Week 12 saw a plethora of games canceled or postponed because of positive COVID-19 cases and respective contact tracing with the day-of decision to postpone the Clemson-Florida State game at the forefront. Five ACC games weren’t played as scheduled in Week 12 while the Pac-12 had two games canceled. The Mountain West had three, and the AAC, Sun Belt and Conference USA each had two.

The number decreased in Week 13; however, in some programs, the outbreaks continued. Florida State, the only ACC team to get canceled, had just 44 scholarship players available last week, leading to the cancellation of their game against Virginia.

The Big Ten postponements and cancellations were headlined with Ohio State as head coach Ryan Day testing positive among others in the program. If the Buckeyes have one more game canceled, they’ll be ineligible to play in the Big Ten championship game. Minnesota at Wisconsin was also canceled and will not be rescheduled, leaving the Badgers ineligible for the Big Ten Championship game.

The Big 12 only had one postponement as well as the SEC. As for the Pac-12, there were two no contests and one game—Utah at Arizona State—that wasn’t played, and Utah traveled to play at Washington instead. Three games were canceled in the Mountain West and Conference USA.

Below is a list of each Week 14 game that’s been postponed or canceled. This list will be updated throughout the week as schedule changes are announced.

University COVID ‘outbreak’ due to more than 50 false positive results

Concordia University in California said more than 50 rapid COVID-19 tests offered to asymptomatic students and faculty came back with false positive results — sparking fears of a potential outbreak on campus.

The Lutheran university in Irvine reported six active cases — four students and two employees — as of Wednesday.

President Michael Thomas thought an outbreak was on the rise when he ordered the tests.

“We wanted to protect families so we offered the rapid, antigen test here at Concordia out of abundance of caution,” he told the Orange County Register. “It was the right thing to do for our students and their families.”

On Saturday, 48 students and 16 staff members tested positive in the last two days after they took the antigen exam, according to the university’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The students self-isolated while waiting for their results from the PCR test, which can detect the virus’ genetic material within days.

The school then canceled sports practices until the spring semester, and urged students not to travel out of state for Thanksgiving.

University officials said students will return to remote learning on Monday until the end of the semester.

College basketball schedule 2020-21: Oklahoma latest to postpone or cancel games due to COVID-19
