College Students Protest Budget Cuts

Some students heading back to college for fall 2010 will see some changes on campus due to budget cuts. Colleges have seen a drop in endowments, contributions, and funding during the 2009-2010 school year. This has caused a lot of colleges and universities to cut their budgets for the 2011 school year. They have also increased tuition to help cover their budget deficits. Here is a list of colleges that have cut their budgets and their affect on students:

1. Delaware State University:
Delaware State University has decided to cut the women's equestrian team and the men's tennis team from their roster for the 2011 season. DSU claims that they spend more money on their sports programs than any other univerisity in their league. Their current budget is set at $ 12 million dollars a year, and by cutting the two DSU Hornets sports teams, they hope to save $ 700,000. The women's equestrian sued Delaware State claiming they were in violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 which prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs, and specifically applies to athletic programs. The students claim that they specifically chose to attend Delaware State to be on their equestrian team. Hoping to dodge a federal court case, the University recently reversed its decision to drop the equestrian team and reinstated it for another year. Delaware State will also be looking at cost saving measures in its remaining sports teams. The DSU women's equestrian team and men's tennis team are not the only sports programs that DSU has tried to eliminate. Last year, they also cut their wrestling program citing economic and equity reasons.

2. Texas State University
Texas Gov. Rick Perry has ordered Texas State to cut their budget by 5%, or $ 7.8 million, this year. Because of the budget cuts, the University will not be hiring any new teachers, and there will be no 3% pay raise this year for current teachers. Texas State faculty members are already the lowest paid out of the 10 largest universities in Texas. Texas State has the highest student to teacher ratio in the state. The free in hiring new faculty will cause the student to teacher ratio to be even higher since there was a 1500 new student growth this past fall. Students may find this could affect their grades as they compete for one on one time with professors. Students will also be paying 5.4% more for their tuition in 2011. This is higher than the 5% tuition increase recommended by Texas State University. On Thursday, March 4, 2010, roughly 100 protests at the University of Texas at Austin rallied against the increase in tuition and fees approved on March 3 by the University of Texas System regents.

3. UCLA
In 2009, the University of California (UC) Board of Regents voted to increase tuition at UCLA by 32%. This increase was scheduled to last until 2011. Unfortunately the tuition increase left UCLA with a 2009-10 budget deficit …

Distance Learning – Post Graduate Online Education Degrees

According to the Survey of Earned Doctorates, as of 2004 there was a 3.4 percent increase in doctorates awarded in the United States. In June, 2004, a total of 41,155 research doctorate lessons were earned by postgraduate students. The recent increase in doctorates degrees awarded after a decade of decline can be partially attributed to the convenience of distance learning postgraduate online education degrees.

Postgraduate degree programs offer students an opportunity to explore a subject to attain the highest levels of proficiency in that area of study. Courses can be based upon a curriculum or independent study and research. A recent study released by both Penn State University Outreach Marketing and Communications and University Continuing Education Association revealed that distance learning is anticipated to grow ten times faster than on-campus education over the next ten years. Further, about 45 percent of college enrollment are adult students who frequently prefer distance learning opportunities to classes on campus. Sun Chairman Scott McNealy states, "Technology has to play a huge role in education. (It's) changed commerce … publishing … banking.

Distance learning postgraduate online education degrees afford busy students the opportunity to earn doctor degrees at their convenience, without having travel to and attend traditional classes. By the time students intend to pursue distance learning postgraduate online education degrees, they are usually computer literate, self-motivated and able to manage their time properly. These are all essential elements to success in virtual classrooms. The two basic types of postgraduate degrees students may earn are professional doctors or research doctors.

Professional doctorates. The United States requires permanent professional doctor degrees to perform in certain fields, such as dentistry, medicine, law, chiropractics, occupational therapy and psychology. Prior to entering these professional doctor programs, students are required to complete a bachelors degree, preferably in a related field. Professional doctor degrees, such as JD and MD, usually do not require students to complete a thesis, although some do require an original research paper to be submitted. Doctor degrees usually take three years to complete after postsecondary education, although distance learning postgraduate online education degrees may be earned more quickly. Because online education courses are often geared for the busy adult learner, students can progress at their own pace.

Research doctorates. The research doctor that is most commonly earned is a Ph.D. The time is complete to complete research doctor degree programs can vary quite a bit, depending on course pursued. It is common for students to take two to three years to complete coursework and three or more years to conduct pertinent research. The benefit of a Ph.D. is that a holder is qualified to pursue an academic career as an expert in their field. Distance learning research doctorate degrees are conveniently pursued online and can be easily worked around professional schedules.

Honorary doctors. These degrees may be awarded for substantive contributions to a field and are not necessarily academic.

Financial Aid. Federal financial aid and loan programs may be applied to distance learning postgraduate online education degrees. …

Reinventing Educational Leadership

As the 21st century continues to unfold, the task of finding competent leaders to occupy positions of leadership in the educational arena continues to be a challenge not because of a lack of academically qualified leaders, but because of a lack of adaptive -competently qualified candidates. As such, many schools are under the leadership of leaders who lack the qualifications necessary to operate educational institutions in an era marked by rapid and constant change. If the educational scenery is to realize any meaningful change educational leadership should be reinvented. This paper identifies some of the challenges currently faced by the Education system. It looks at how these challenges may be addressed by reinventing educational leadership. The paper culminates with brief recommendations of how institutions of higher learning as well as stakeholders in the educational sector may reinvent the manner in which they prepare educational leaders -the end result not only academically-qualified, but also adaptive-competently qualified leaders who are capable to perform in environments characterized by constant and rapid changes.

The educational environment in contemporary society is one in which change represents one of the very few constants. Cultural, social, political, technological and economic changes have asserted in a more diverse school populace since the genesis of education. With the advent of these changes, the educational sector is now faced with increased challenges. Challenges such as: low family literacy, increased poverty margins, a rise in dysfunctional families, and increased access to counter-productive information via internet. These challenges have seemingly created an uneven play ground where students from all walks of life enter the education system being different, but by the time they exit, the barriers of differences should fade significantly, at least academically. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. An article by The National Association of Secondary School Principals "How do you reinvent a principal" highlights a number of effects these challenges have birthed: higher drop out rates, lower academic achievement and teacher attrition. The impact of the effects of these challenges on society is detrimental, as more students exit the educational system without the necessary qualifications to become positively contributing citizens to society.

As these changes and their impact are characterized in the educational environment, stakeholders are forced to raise their expectations from those in leadership positions within schools. Copeland in his article "The myth of a Super Principal" substantiates this point when he states that the expectations of leaders have increased significantly since the 1980's (2001). The mandate of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2001 solidified the prior statements as under the act leaders working in schools which were subsequently reclassified as not meeting annual annual progress (AYP) goals were relinquished of their positions. Incidentally, most of the leaders who were "relocated" were academically qualified for leadership positions, but lacking adaptive-competency qualification. Academically qualified leaders have successfully completed their years of training, by mastering the necessary dogma that was required. Adaptive-competent leaders are able to execute the theoretical skills practically and are able to assess new …
