Low Self Esteem Can Affect Your Work and Career

Have you ever noticed that the people who have successful careers also have a healthy (or even overblown) sense of themselves and their abilities? The ability to see the great things you bring to your job and being strong enough to stand up for what you believe are essential to on-the-job success.

Those who exhibit extremely meek and mild personalities naturally fall into the background. While they may in reality be more qualified and capable of doing the job, they aren’t the ones who command the respect and authority necessary for those big promotions. Strong personalities exude strength and power and tend to be the ones chosen to lead in the workforce.

So, if you are struggling to move to the next level at work, you may want to take a good hard look at your level of self esteem and whether or not it may be harming your chances of advancement by not allowing your co-workers and superiors to see the wonderful asset you are to the company.

Watch for these career busters:

Lack of Confidence.

A lack of confidence in yourself can carry over in the way others view your ability to take over a project and make sure it is completed on time, on budget and with the creativity and attention it deserves. Until you can show a sincere belief in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you?

Lack of Control.

People who don’t have confidence in themselves often lack the control to get others to do what they need to. Those in superior positions at work have to have the power to be able to get people moving in order to get the job done.

An Inability to Take Responsibility.

Those with little self esteem often find it difficult to accept even minimal criticism or suggestions and may exhibit an inability to accept responsibility for things that have gone wrong (often placing blame on others around them), and the willingness or aptitude to tackle problems that may arise.

An Inability To Try New Things.

Being a supervisor of people and projects requires a certain sense of adventure. Those who are stuck doing everything the same old way years after year out of fear of rejection often find sales sluggish and clients unhappy.

One way to ensure that you won’t move up in a company is to leave before you even have a chance at a promotion. People with low self-esteem are restless and often view their current job as a stepping stone to the next one, but never really stay long enough to make a real impression.

A Lack of Intimacy.

While office romances should be discouraged, you do need to be able to connect with the people you work with on a personal note to be able to move forward. Good supervisors get to know the people below them and take the time to understand what personal issues may be affecting their job performance. People with low self-esteem are uncomfortable forming …

Online University – Distance Learning Options

Many people can not attend a physical university, for any number of reasons. Mostly it is due to their income being needed to support a family, or a lack of funding to maintain themselves for a few years. Some people simply do not want to give up their present jobs, but need to qualify for promotion.

Acknowledged as a university, distance learning offers many people the opportunity to further their studies, in situations that would otherwise have proved impossible. It allows you to work at your own pace, in your own time, according to your own daily schedule.

Distance learning is offered by many institutions all over, accommodating students from anywhere. Similar to any other university, you are required to take an aptitude test, and pass an entrance test. Foreign students are required to prove their command of the language used for presentation.

Online universities, just like their physical counterparts, offer a wide range of bachelor's and master's degree courses. If you are concerned about the credibility of your online degree, do not be. As long as you choose an accredited institution, your degree will be accepted.

The biggest difference is communication. Classrooms and lectures are replaced by emails and online forums. Workshops and joint projects are done via chat and video conferencing. Your fellow student could be from anywhere.

The biggest drawback is the fact that your success depends heavily on your self discipline. There are no regular time schedules or routines. Distance learning is all about taking responsibility for your own performance.

In contrast to a physical university, distance learning makes your remote location irrelevant. It accommodates your personal schedule, your capacity, and your personal commitments. The only thing required is a desire to succeed. …

College Study Skills – How to Concentrate

I tend to drift off a lot when I study and end up wasting a lot of time. How can I maintain my concentration when I study?

This is a huge problem for students… And, for good reason!

There is just too much to keep track of and remember when you’re in college (papers, exams, quizzes, events, your personal life, that birthday card for your mom, feeding the dog, remember to take your vitamins and protein shake, etc). It all boils down to clutter. If your mind is cluttered, you are not going to have an easy time focusing much on anything – even if it happens to be something you like!

So, the real problem is clutter and the solution involves putting all the noise in your head aside temporarily while you focus on your task.

Lets say you have a reading to do for tomorrow’s psychology lecture. You know that it’s a longer reading (compared to some of the others you’ve done) and so you estimate that you’ll need about an hour. Now, you reason, if you could focus intensely, you’d only need 30 minutes.

So, how can you accomplish more in less time?

Here’s a quick method to apply to get you out of your jam:

  • Go to your study place. It must be quiet and free of distractions (food courts, libraries sometimes, near your classrooms, etc)
  • Go alone. Friends/Buddies are a guaranteed distraction
  • Get settled, open you books, etc.
  • Now, take a moment to de-clutter… Whatever’s on your mind — put everything aside for the next 30 minutes that you’ve determined you need. Nothing else should matter during this time except your reading. Nothing!
  • Skim the reading so you know what to expect. Spend a minute or two doing this. Observing the headings can help to size up what you’re about to read.
  • Now, start reading quickly (as fast as you can go without sacrificing your comprehension of the material). With enough practice, you’ll be able to read progressively faster (while maintaining comprehension) if you force yourself to move your quickest possible each time you sit down to do a reading
  • If thoughts interrupt you…. STOP, take a moment to RE-FOCUS, and start again
  • If you maintain this focus, you will find it easier to get through your task without interruption

Now, this is a very effective method to help you concentrate and you can start using it immediately to start seeing results. Often, however, students still find it hard to focus (no matter how hard they try to de-clutter). If you’re having problems getting past the noise in your head, there are other areas you can work on to help you when it comes down to studying and retaining the material, in particular:

  • time management
  • good lecture note-taking skills
  • knowing how to figure out what the professor really wants you to know
  • establishing good study skills & habits

These topics are important because they really help you in the long run from …

The Relationship Between Online Education and the Future of Your Business

As a parent of two teens, I pay very close attention to education and business trends. I was one of those mothers who stayed at home for years with my children, foregoing (by choice) a lucrative career and finding myself unemployed in high paying jobs, fortunately got retrained and now back again in business for myself.

Four years ago, about late 2008, I saw the trend of online education and managed my daughter in part-time middle school and on to high school online education. Many of the activities at school were a waste of time and talents … and may I say quite polite and plain favoritism being played out!

Today at 17, she has graduated high school with a diploma, one year earlier than her peers.

What has this got to do with your business or my writing business?

I've just read an email from Copyblogger, one of the top blogs that I follow and admire recently, one month to be exact. The topic "how the explosion in online education can revolutionize your business."

Just like the author of the article said, I am also a fan of university education but they are not created equal. The 6-figure price tag sure does not help if the child is not winning any marketable skills after 4 years.

Again, what has this got to do with your business?

If schools and universities, the very traditional arenas, are recognizing the need to go online and are establishing more online courses and online presence … there are clues for parents and business owners like you and I to track:

One: You need a blog

If a small business owner like me could get my voice out there through a blog, you could too and build bigger than me because you already have a following.

My 17 year old has a blog and she is attracting clients to her site at the moment without paid advertising.

If written strategically, your blog could attract your ideal clients as well.

Two: Send emails to your readers and clients

I've been receiving emails just about a month ago from Copyblogger and I love it. They help me stay inform with their content and services. I'm too busy with projects and do not have time to google or read their blog posts on a daily basis.

Now they keep me informed and soon I will be a client.

If you have a list and do not send out emails or newsletters to your readers, clients or potential clients you are missing out.

Three: Social Media

Another avenue for searches are through social media platforms. There is tons of information that Google will non-display for you or to you. You will need written words for your social media platforms.

Are you feeling overwhelmed with no time, no clue, do not know where to start with your blog, emails or written words on your social media platforms?

The Science Behind Brain Wave Patterns

The human brain is made up of very many cells that are called neurons. These cells use electricity for purposes of communication among themselves. Because, they number billions, the combined effect of these neurons is sending signals at the same time produces very high amounts of electrical activities in the human brain.

This can only be detected using sensitive medical equipments, which measure the brain wave patterns over some certain areas of the scalp. 'Brain wave patterns' is a term that is most commonly used to refer to brain's electrical activities because of its wave-like and cyclic nature.

To get the concept of brain-wave patterns clearly, it is important to understand the nature of frequencies that these wave patterns produce and the mental sate that is associated with them. After the brainwaves were discovered, scientists later discovered that the brain's electrical activities could change depending on the activities that a person is undertaking.

For example, the brainwaves when a person is sleeping are quite different to those of a person who is fully awake. Over the past several years, highly sensitive equipments have made it almost possible to figure out which brainwaves are exactly present and what they signify on the person's state of mind and health.

The different brain wave patterns are associated with certain mental states.

These brain wave patterns have frequency of between 12 Hz and 38Hz. They are associated with them mental state of being broadly awake. This reflects to the mental state in which most of the people are in especially during the daytime when engaged in activities such as walking. Although the mental state of being broadly awake is in most cases uneventful, it is quite important.

It is important to note that in real life, most people lack the beta activity which may cause emotional or mental disorders such as insomnia or depression. The stimulation of beta activity may cause an improvement in concentration, attentiveness, energy levels and emotional stability.

These brain wave patterns have frequencies of between 8 and 12 Hz. The associated mental state is that of being relaxed and awake but not processing a lot of information. You are in the alpha sate state just before you sleep and immediately after waking up in the morning.

On closing your eyes, the brain begins producing more alpha waves automatically. Alpha is generally the goal of the meditators that are experienced. Because alpha is a seriously receptive and highly absorbent mental state, it can also be used for mental re-programming and effective self-hypnosis.

These brain wave patterns have frequency of between 3 Hz and 8Hz. It is associated with extreme relaxation and light sleep. It can be used self-programming and hypnosis by use of suggestions that are pre-recorded.

These brain wave patterns are the slowest, and they have frequency of between 0.2 and 3 Hz. They associated with deep and dreamless sleep. People Delta brain wave patterns have a body that is capable of healing itself and at …

Reasons Government is Necessary

A government is an organization in a community or political entity that has the power to enact and enforce laws and maintain the peace and order. A government is necessary since is it considered the leadership of an organization, community or political entity.

Laws are important since it defines the behavior of citizens. It defines which are legal or illegal. Without laws, an activity can not be known if it a crime or not. The law-making role of the government creates a code of conduct for individuals to follow.

Another role of the government is the maintenance of peace and order. The police and fire department ensures that crimes like murder, theft, arson, etc. are prevented or minimized. If a crime does happen, it is their role to look into how the crime happened and apprehend the perpetrators.

Government also promotes harmony though justice and equality. Once a crime is solved by the police, it is the duty of the judicial branch of the government to bring the perpetrator to court for fair trial and punishment. It makes sure that the right person gets into jail for the right reason.

It is also the role of the government to build roads, bridges, rail systems and other infrastructure. These are important since it makes moving about easier and more convenient. It also makes doing business a lot easier since goods and services can be moved faster from the source of production to the marketplace.

Another role of the government is to provide children with public access to basic education. It is essential that children learn how to read, write and count.

Another role of the government is to collect taxes and ensure that these taxes fund the right projects that are beneficial to society. Money is needed to build public schools, roads and bridges and provide services like welfare assistance, health care, unemployment benefits, etc. This is where taxes come in. The government collects taxes from individuals and business so that schools, roads and other infrastructure are built.

It is also important that the government protect its security from threats. It is the role of the government to have a military force to defend its territory from external threats like terrorism, war and invasion. The government’s police force protects the citizens against internal threats like civil disobedience, organized crime, lawlessness, insurrection.

Another role of the government is to have foster relations with other governments. In an era of globalization, it is important that governments work with each other to maintain world peace and prosperity.…

Middle School Science Projects – Turning Non-Experiments Into the Real Thing

Middle school science projects almost always have to be done in the form of an experiment. The trouble for most students is that most of the time, projects that are on the internet or in books are either demonstrations or models. Since they do not follow the scientific method, neither of these meet the qualifications of the middle school science fair.

The good news is that many times, a model can be used in an experiment, and variables can be added to a demonstration, so that it can be one, too. Here are five examples of projects that are modified to become an experiment.

– How can you make a potato canon? – This is a fun activity, and it demonstrates how cool science can be, but it does not test anything. How can you turn it into an experiment? Vary the trajectory, and ask, "At which angle will a potato canon launch a potato the farthest?"

– What happens when seeds germinate? – This is a great lesson, but what are kids comparing? Turn it into an experiment by testing "At which temperature do seeds germinate the best?" Use different watt bulbs to vary the temperature.

– How do bones change when soaked in vinegar? – This is close to an experiment, but the project I saw did not have a way to measure the change. The results of a true experiment must be measurable. Come up with a weight to measure the amount of weight the bones can support before breaking, and you may just win your middle school science fair.

– How hot can a solar heater get? – First of all, finding the answer to this question may result in a fire! Make it an experiment by testing two different solar heater models. Construct two identical heaters, one with a glass front, and the other with a plexiglass front. Measure the temperature over multiple days, and see which one got the hottest.

– What happens when you mix chalk and lemon juice? – Studying acids and bases is fascinating, but there are no variables – so it's not an experiment. Change it up. Soak pieces of chalk in water, a basic solution, and an acid, and note the variance in the weight.

Remember, an experiment is a test of the relationship between two variables that have measurable results that can be replicated. It amazes me that reputable science publications will label any sort of science activity as an experiment. It does not matter that you're still in middle school type of project is not right. You can do better than 'real' scientists! Turn a 'non-experiments' into middle school projects that will amaze judges, your teachers – and yourself! …

Implementing New School Science Materials

There are a lot of different methods of teaching, but not all of them seem to highlight the way many of today's students learn. The traditional routes to engaging students can be hit or miss at best, and while classrooms keep getting bigger and bigger the test scores keep dropping on a national level. In fact, there are many schools around the country that are not able to bring their science and math scores up, and try as they might, there seems to be no answer, until now. There are some teachers that have taken a proactive approach to implement new school science materials in the classroom and they have been getting major results. The results have all been positive because these new elements create a wonder and mystique about the universe in many ways, which in turn prompts imagination.

While some people will not be keen on engaging the imagination, others find it to be one of the easiest ways to get middle school science a bit more popular amongst young people. Face it, there are some subjects that are just harder to teach than others, and science is one of them. As school age children get older the subject matter gets harder and trying to get sparks to fly on a daily basis can be difficult overall. Teachers spend a great deal of time trying to figure out new ways to get their kids to actively study, and learn from the curriculum that is given to them by their districts, and while lectures, videos, and images do not seem to always work , new school science materials can seem to be the answer that many are seeking.

You see, when you present science kits and more to your students you will be able to showcase a sense of wonder that is sometimes missing from classroom efforts. If you can spark their creative side and you can manage to teach, entertain, and explore all within one easy methodology, you will win them over on the subject for many years. Do not allow yourself to get into a rut, look at a new way to educate and you'll see what many are calling a break through transmission.

There is no reason why scholastics can not be fun, especially when many new school science materials are allowing so much more engagement in the classroom. As a teacher you owe your students a refreshing way to look at difficult concepts, and with modernity, many new ideas are popping up and some are definitely winning in class and out. …

College Athletic Scholarships – The 5 Misconceptions

Families seem to be in the middle of a perfect storm as they look to send their sons and daughters to college. The stock market has wiped out a lot of the savings people thought they had; college tuition has climbed; the economy has wiped out millions of jobs; house prices have collapsed and destroyed equity; and more kids than ever want a higher education.

Maybe the promising circumstances for you is that your child plays a sport – even plays it pretty well. Sounds like you, right? You would not be reading this otherwise. So help in the form of an athletic scholarship may well be on the cards. You will need to navigate the recruiting process, and make some difficult judgments about contacting college coaches, bringing on college consultants, negotiating terms (if you are lucky enough to get that far) and all the rest of a potentially complicated process. But for those with prospects, and need, there is just no other way.

And there is no question that a sports scholarship can help pay for that college education. It may not be a full ride – but any contribution would be welcomed by most of us. The challenge for parents though, especially those new to the college recruiting process, is to navigate the unfamiliar terrain in a race where the stakes could not be higher. Hey, it's only your child's education!

Jennifer Noonan of College Sports Quest has been counseling high school athletes in Southern California for around 10 years and has advised over 500 families in that time. She warns against leaving everything to the student. It is just too important for the athlete not to have the full backing of the family.

And as Jennifer Noonan she sees it, there are five common misconceptions when it comes to college recruiting and sports scholarships.

Myth # 1: If you are good enough, coaches will always find out about you
And all good things come to those who wait. In a perfect world, this is exactly what would happen. Alas, our world is less than perfect. And a college scholarship is too important to leave to chance. You must be proactive. I

Myth # 2: You have plenty of time
Not nearly as much as you think. Around 25% of high school athletes are identified as college scholarship prospects when they are freshman. Another 35% are identified as sophomores. And another 45% or so are identified when they are juniors. Not that many get identified as seniors. So you do not have as much time as you think. According to Noonan and College Sports Quest [http://www.collegesportsquest.com], the time for you to start your own recruiting efforts – in most sports – is by September 1 of your junior year (or earlier).

Myth # 3: Your coach has connections and will get you registered
Coaches' first job is to train you – so you can get received. And they are busy – many have teaching duties on top of …
