Week 8 College Football Schedule, Guide, Games: TV Time

Watch Live:: http://ussports.uk/f-t-b-l-8/

College football action continues Saturday with a loaded schedule of games. The Big Ten finally makes its 2020 debut with seven games on its conference-only slate. No. 5 Ohio State opens at home against Nebraska while No. 18 Michigan heads to No. 21 Minnesota in the night cap. The Mountain West will also return to action this week, leaving just the Pac-12 and MAC to kick off their seasons over the next two weeks.hgjh

There’s a total of four games featuring teams ranked inside the AP Top 25 poll this week. Big 12 teams collide in an important matchup for conference supremacy when No. 6 Oklahoma State hosts No. 17 Iowa State. There’s also a huge showdown in ACC country when No. 14 North Carolina welcomes No. 23 NC State in big rivalry game. While it’s not a big SEC slate (only three games total), No. 2 Alabama is still in action when it takes on Tennessee in Knoxville in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week.gfhfhj

Our experts at CBS Sports are here to help you navigate what game to play with expert picks both straight up and against the spread. Let’s take a look at four key games this weekend. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff at noon to the final whistle of day.gfhj

Odds via William Hill Sportsbook | All times Easterng

Nebraska at No. 5 Ohio State (-26) — noon on Fox: Let me start by saying that I don’t have a high level of confidence in this pick. More than anything, I’m putting faith in the Nebraska offense to find enough success to keep this game from getting too far out of hand. That said, I’m also relying on some early-season rust on Ohio State’s part. I also wonder that, with the Big Ten’s compacted schedule, if we’ll see Ohio State turn to its reserves more often should it build a big lead in an effort to keep everyone fresh and healthy. If that happens, it could help the Cornhuskers stay within this spread. Pick: Nebraska (+26) — Tom Fornellifdgfh

No. 23 NC State at No. 14 North Carolina (-15.5) — noon on ESPN: Both teams are in the AP Top 25 poll for only the third time in the 110 meetings of this rivalry and for the first time since 1993. The historic nature of this moment in a rivalry packed with hate and history leads me to believe we will operate on the extremes. Either North Carolina wins by 20, or NC State gets the outright upset. There is no in between. There is only heartbreak. I say Sam Howell and the Tar Heels continue the strong second half performance against Florida State and left that woeful first half. If NC State has to dig itself out of a hole without injured starting quarterback Devin Leary, it could

At least 18 killed, dozens wounded in suicide bombing outside Kabul education center

At least 18 people were killed and 57 injured Saturday during a suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, the interior ministry said. The casualty toll may rise as family members continue searching hospitals where the wounded are being treated.

The explosion occurred outside an education center in Dasht-e-Barchi, a heavily Shiite neighborhood in the western section of the capital, per The Associated Press. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Taliban — which has begun peace talks with the Afghan government amid an ongoing, decades-long conflict that has seen a recent surge in violence — rejected any involvement. The Islamic State said it was behind a similar attack that killed 34 students at an education center in 2018, but there has been no word from the militant group regarding the most recent incident.

Also on Saturday, one roadside bomb killed nine people in eastern Afghanistan, and a second killed two policemen after it struck their vehicle en route to the site of the first explosion. Again, no one claimed responsibility, although a spokesman for the provincial police claimed the Taliban had placed the explosives, AP reports. Read more at The Associated Press. Tim O’Donnell

McLaughlin ready for career change from Supercars to IndyCar

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Scott McLaughlin had no deal in place to leave Australian Supercars and expand into a fourth IndyCar entry for Team Penske when he flew from Sydney to the United States this week.

McLaughlin had just won his third consecutive Supercars title and immediately jumped on a plane to begin preparations for his IndyCar debut. It was among the worst kept secrets that McLaughlin would be full-time IndyCar next season, but without a deal, the 27-year-old New Zealander approached Sunday’s season finale at St. Petersburg as a tryout he’d ace.

“I was confident that I’d be OK and have an opportunity next year,” McLaughlin said Saturday.

Instead, he said he was pulled into a meeting with team owner Roger Penske and President Tim Cindric and said a deal was done; Team Penske was leaving Supercars and McLaughlin was in the No. 3 IndyCar next year.

“They told me they were going to announce it (Friday night) and that suits me because it got a bit of a weight off my shoulders,” McLaughlin said. “I was able to walk into the pits knowing that I’m going to be back here in March and be at the Indy 500 and it’s an awesome opportunity.”

McLaughlin jumped to second on the speed chart in his first IndyCar practice but also twice spun. He qualified 21st.

McLaughlin with 56 career Supercars victories is second on the all-time list. He has three titles and set the single-season win record with 18 victories in 2019.

Although he wanted to be moved to IndyCar — McLaughlin wanted a fresh challenge, and his wife, Karly Paone, is an American from New York — he said closing out his Supercars career left him restless the night before his first practice.

“It was a bit emotional. For it to end is a bit sad,” McLaughlin said. “The fans in Australia have known me since I was 16 when I jumped on the scene. It’s nice to be able to spread wings, but it’s a little nerve-racking feeling like the first day of school.

“I was a big fish in a little pond and now I’m jumping in as a little fish again.”

College football games on CBS Sports Network — Nevada-Wyoming, SDSU-UNLV: TV channel, watch live stream

It’s a big week for Group of Five teams as the Mountain West begins its season, including a pair of games on CBS Sports Network. Action got started on Friday night when Louisiana knocked off UAB in a Conference USA clash. The Ragin’ Cajuns are now 4-1 on the year.

As we head into Saturday night, CBS Sports Network’s quadruple header of games continues as the focus shifts west for the night slate.

The evening brings the beginning of the Mountain West season as a pair of bowl teams from last season square off with Nevada hosting Wyoming in the 7 p.m. ET slot. Then San Diego State hosts UNLV in the nightcap as the Aztecs play their first game of Brady Hoke’s second tenure as coach.

Army vs. Mercer

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24 | Time: Noon ET
Location: Michie Stadium — West Point, New York
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: Army may have faded from the national radar after cracking the AP Top 25 poll at No. 22 and subsequently losing to Cincinnati, but the Knights have won three straight and have a chance to surpass last season’s win total this week. Doing so will require beating a Mercer team playing its second game of the season. The Bears, who compete at the FCS level, dropped a 34-28 game against perennial FCS power Jacksonville State two weeks ago.

Navy vs. Houston

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24 | Time: 3:30 p.m. ET
Location: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium — Annapolis, Maryland
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: A game between No. 9 Cincinnati and No. 16 SMU may be the headliner of the day in the AAC, but Houston and Navy is an excellent undercard matchup. The Midshipmen are off to a 3-0 start in the league while Houston sits at 1-0 in the conference. The Cougars didn’t start their season until Oct. 8 but have look much-improved so far in Dana Holgorsen’s second season. Navy has been living on the edge with a combined nine-point margin of victory in its three AAC games so far.

Nevada vs. Wyoming

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24 | Time: 7 p.m. ET
Location: Mackay Stadium — Reno, Nevada
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App

Storylines: Wyoming finished second in the Mountain West in team defense last season but struggled offensively. If the Cowboys are going to meet lofty expectations this year, they will need more from quarterback Sean Chambers. The sophomore completed just 43% of his passes last season, but the entire offensive line back. That will come in handy against a Nevada defense deploying one of the top players in the conference on its defensive line in Dom Peterson. The junior has 12 career sacks and is on several preseason watch lists.

San Diego State vs. UNLV

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24 | Time: 10:30 p.m. ET
Location: Dignity

Exam Irregularities in Nigerian Schools

Conventionally, examinations are regarded as a method of assessment of students who have gone through one level of education or another at the end of a term, semester or academic year.

However, among other disturbing developments which the industry is experiencing in the country nowadays, the incidence of examination malpractices in the Nigerian educational system is a cardinal one that is fast assuming a level of national and international embarrassment and dangerous dimension. It is a damaging epidemic, which if not cured soon, may destroy the nation’s all-important education sector.

Examination malpractices are generally described as wrongdoings before, during or after examinations. And, without mincing words, these are having telling, negative effects on the nation’s quality of education, just as many school leavers and graduates can no longer defend their certificates. As sinister as this endemic trend may appear, urgent measures need to be adopted for the cankerworm not to destroy the nation’s future completely before long: it’s too critical to be neglected. And, this is certainly, another cogent reason Nigeria needs moral renaissance and value regeneration in all aspects of its national life.

How does one describe what an examination malpractice is? According to Nwana (2000), examination malpractice is described as the “massive and unprecedented abuse of rules and regulations pertaining to internal and public examinations, beginning from the setting of such examinations through the taking of the examinations, their marking and grading, to the release of the results and the issuance of certificates.”

In a similar vein, an academic has attempted another description of this unbridled phenomenon as “the act of omission or commission intended to make a student pass examination without relying absolutely on his/her independent ability or resources.”

Certain research findings, conclusions, instructive and informed submissions of educationalists, academics, and other top stakeholders in this special sector of the nation’s economy, however, have indicated that there had been one form of examination malpractice or the other before since in the early 1970s when “mass cheating was first perpetrated in WAEC” (West African Examinations Council).

Perhaps, this realisation jolted the examination body at the secondary school level to examine critically, various manifestations and extent of this retrogressive inclination. It reportedly, categorised the different forms of examination malpractice as including bringing in foreign materials to exam halls, irregular activities inside and outside examination halls, collusion, impersonation, leakage, mass cheating and insult/assault on supervisors during exams.

Other forms of exam malpractices identified by WAEC include assistance of candidates by invigilators to answer or have clue to difficult concepts, while some invigilators also go to the extent of answering some parts of the question for candidates, aside from other forms as “giraffing, contraband, bullet, super print, escort, missiles, and pregnant biros.”

Nonetheless, what has happened to the survival of the country’s education system from that time till this day? Unfortunately, in the continued 21st Century, examination malpractices of varying sorts, forms and manifestations, incontrovertibly, have worsened and become a national problem. The unbecoming tendency voraciously, continues to eat deep into …

Thanks To Schmidt Futures, The Keeling Curve Lives To Measure CO2 Another Day

The Keeling Curve, whose daily measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in Mauna Loa have demonstrated how rapidly fossil fuel emissions are altering greenhouse gases, recently received $1 million in funding from the Schmidt Family’s Foundation to sustain future operations.

“More than ever, we need good data to inform our critical policy decisions, and the Keeling Curve is an essential measurement of a changing climate,” said Wendy Schmidt. The Schmidt Ocean Institute also furnished a $450,000 grant to measure changes in seawater chemistry in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Charles David Keeling initially started taking these daily measurements at Hawai’i’s Mauna Loa Observatory – as well as Arctic and Antarctic stations – in 1958. And, Keeling’ son, Ralph, has continued these efforts into the present day. Since the initial measurement of 313 ppm CO2 measured just over 50 years ago, atmospheric CO2 has increased by 100 ppm CO2 – a rate that is 100 times faster than prior natural increases.

Despite the critical climate trends that the Keeling Curve has revealed and life-altering research it has made possible, scientists have struggled to consistently fund the long-term dataset. Funding from the Weather Bureau helped launch the dataset and it has since been maintained by a patchwork of short-term grants. This is partially because federal funding for long-term research has declined in favor of studies and grants spanning approximately three years.

A budget shortfall in 2013 led to crowdfunding efforts that raised a little over 2% of what is needed to operate the monitoring program each year. It was at this critical juncture that the Schmidts first provided support so that three years’ worth of backlogged samples could be analyzed. And, their most recent contribution will help fund the measurements through 2025.

“Atmospheric CO2 is an important bottom line for the climate problem,” said Ralph Keeling, “We are very grateful to be able to continue this important work.” ”

Alabama vs. Tennessee score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

No. 2 Alabama is up 28-10 at halftime on Tennessee in Neyland Stadium as the SEC on CBS Game of the Week rolls on. Running back Najee Harris has two rushing touchdowns, Brian Robinson has one, and quarterback Mac Jones added a 1-yard plunge to lead the Crimson Tide to the big lead. Jones, a Heisman Trophy front-runner, is 16-of-20 passing for 284 yards through two quarters.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the Crimson Tide offense, though. Star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was injured on the opening kickoff with a broken ankle that will sideline him for the season. Tennessee’s offense has been held in check all afternoon even as quarterback Jarrett Guaranatano had a gorgeous 38-yard touchdown pass to Jalin Hyatt for the Volunteers’ only touchdown of the game.

Interview With Shiv Misra, CVS Health

Over the last decade, data and analytics have grown to be more than just a quantitative support function. Many organizations have traditionally used data to win customers and market share. However they are now also leveraging data to re-design future products based on evolving customer needs and macro trends. While significant progress has been made in the field of machine learning, as well as artificial intelligence –there is one critical element to making this all work: having the right data. Business decisions that are built using flawed data can cause an organization significant revenue loss, increased expenses, compliance issues, possible legal issues and even more severe ramifications.

The focus on machine learning is making data even more essential than ever. At the recent Data for AI 2020 conference, Shiv Misra who is the Head of Medicare Retention Analytics at CVS Health shared how he compares data to oxygen, how companies can support actionable insights from their data, and examples of how data has successfully been used throughout his diverse and impressive previous positions at Fortune 500 organizations. In this article, he further shares insights on these topics.

Why is it so important for organizations to think about their data – from a collection, usage, and privacy perspective?

Shiv Misra: Throughout my experience within data science and analytics, I’ve noticed a general tendency amongst businesses to glorify advanced analytics while treating data simply as the necessary first step. I have also seen a lot of sophisticated models and insights that could have driven large business impact, being tossed out of the window because the data that was used missed the mark on either accuracy, precision or timeliness. I therefore strongly believe that having an organization’s data accurately connected across all internal departments and with 2nd+3rd party sources can truly power winning strategies.

How do companies support actionable insights from their data backed by advanced analytics?

Shiv Misra: The honest truth is that while data science and analytics can help mine incredibly powerful insights, it takes strong partnership with business to drive real change and a sizable impact. This partnership with business is founded on two critical pillars i.e. Trust and Accountability.

To highlight the use case for Trust, I would love to share an example from my role at PayPal where I was tasked by the leadership to grow the usage of decision science solutions within the organization. I was surprised as to why will that be needed at an organization that is built around data. After a series of surveys, interviews and 1×1 discussions, I realized that since there were thousands of data savvy decision makers within the company who had access to hundreds of data sources. There was an overall lack of trust in the data that was being leveraged by the analytics team and hence not many users wanted to log-in and utilize the powerful decision science engine that our team had created. We found a
