There are lot many certification courses currently in the market. But one of them, creating a lot of buzz is Data Science courses and certification. Now it is an idea which is relatively new.

So first, let’s put some light on this new found science.


Every day various tech companies are gathering loads and loads of data and storing them in storage frameworks. Where is this coming from? As mentioned by IBM, they are coming from various internal and external data sources of particular concern.

  • Social media

For e.g., Flipkart manages to get hold of huge amounts of big data on an everyday basis. People log in on their website or mobile app and go about searching for items. People can be from various locations and demographics. They may buy some or just do window shopping. If they are buying then they will be paying by a certain mode of payment. Now all these data from several customers are stored. And then the work of sorting and finding meaningful insights from it starts.

And data science is just that, finding inferences from the complex unstructured data by using the science tools and algorithms.

Data, when mined, gives the result of Data Product which is used to bring value to a business. Knowing what are your customer’s preferences, buying patterns and paying pattern; one can create customer satisfaction and retention.


It can be used in several different fields. Like E-commerce, medical and public healthcare, defense, entertainment. It helps in growing one’s business and finding solutions to complex problems.

It is created by testing and refining the data, deploying it into production systems. Business value appreciation will not just come from data and algorithms one should also know how to leverage the product of data into creating highly valued propaganda.


Data scientists play a pivotal role in developing the data product. They work on the technical development of the data product which is further used in strategic decision making. However, the question arises, how to become a data scientist, and what all specs are needed to be one.

Broadly, to be a data scientist one should have mathematical skills as for using the data to find solutions to problems is a quantitative task. Secondly, one should have technological knowledge because to extract meaningful data from raw information one need to use various complex tools, like python, SQL, R, SAS, Java, Scala etc. And lastly, one need to have business strategy skills. Business acumen is needed to apply these data results cohesively to real-world business problems.
