Easy Kids Science Fair Project Idea and Demonstration

In this science project you will learn how to create a thermometer to measure heat.

This is an instrument used in various applications to measure temperature. Doctors use them to check our body heat and we use a gauge outside to see how cold or warm the weather is. In the United States we general use Fahrenheit to measure the temperature but you can also use Celsius. With Fahrenheit 32 degrees is freezing and 0 degrees is freezing with Celsius measurements.

Here is what you will need to get:

  • Water
  • Alcohol (rubbing alcohol – DO NOT DRINK)
  • Clear plastic bottle. Use a common water bottle which is empty
  • Food color
  • Straw
  • Play dough

Instructions to make this equipment:

  1. Mix equal parts of the water and alcohol together to make about c cup. This means you will need 1/8 cup of water and 1/8 cup of alcohol. Do not make more than this amount.
  2. Pour the liquid into the plastic bottle.
  3. Put a few drops of food coloring into the bottle. This will be your measure for the thermometer so make it interesting. A normal gauge uses red as its color because it stands out so if you want it to look traditional use a red food color.
  4. Mix the color with the liquid until blended.
  5. Insert the straw through the opening but do not let it touch the bottom of the bottle. The bottom of the straw should sit in the liquid but not touch the bottom.
  6. Use the play dough or clay and put it around the mouth of the bottle securing the straw in place. You can actually wrap the dough around the lip a little to make sure it seals the bottle and holds the straw where it should be.
  7. DO NOT DRINK THIS!

Now warm your hands up by rubbing them together quickly and then place them around the bottle. Hold them on the bottle and watch the straw in your thermometer rise.

Congratulations! You just made a thermometer and it is showing the heat created by holding your hands on the bottle. With a thermometer when the solution inside gets warm it expands and pushes the mixture up the opening because it no longer fits in the bottom of your plastic container . If your mixture would get very hot the alcohol would end up spilling out the stop of the straw.

Leave your thermometer on a counter and watch it through the day and over a week time period to graph how it changes. Does it go up if the bottle is placed in the sun? What happens when it is shaded? Now this will not show the exact temperature outside but it does show change in warmth and coolness by the expansion of the mixture.

When finished with your product. Make sure to have your parents dispose of the material in a proper place and you will have to throw away the bottle. It can not be used for anything else. Enjoy this science …

My Master’s Degree – How Should I Talk And Write About It?

There are many circumstances in which foreign student have to talk about their intentions to study for advanced degrees. Statements of purpose written to accompany applications for university admission are the most obvious case, but the same situation comes up in interviews with recruiters, IELTS Speaking Tasks, and verbal interactions of all kinds with the officials at the universities you will be attending.

Unfortunately, it’s the time many foreign students say things that sound the least “English.” As a result, these unavoidable statements can often suggest that your command of English is weak. Even though all the native English speakers who regularly hear foreign students make these statements have long gotten used to hearing them spoken incorrectly, the mistake always registers with them at some level, however unconsciously.

To make the best impression on university administrators and IELTS examiners, use the right language to talk about your degree and your academic sentences.

The following are the most common mistakes:

“I’m going to learn a master’s degree.”

“I’m going to study a master’s degree.”

“I plan to learn a master degree.”

Don’t make these unnecessary but common mistakes. All that is necessary for you not to make them is to understand clearly what the appropriate words are and mean.

– A “master’s degree” is a noun. When written, it always has an apostrophe, that is, “master’s degree,” not “masters degree” or, worse, “master degree.”

– A master’s degree is not, however, a field of study. We don’t study a master’s degree, we study a field in which we earn (or, more colloquially, “get”) a maser’s degree. Therefore, in English, we say that we plan “to earn a master’s degree in marketing [or the name of some other field].”

– The degree is what we get as a result of studying, not what we study. So, when we talk about studying, we normally say, “I plan to study economics [or some other field].” It’s not incorrect to say, “I plan to learn marketing,” but “I plan to study marketing” is more normal, idiomatic English.

– The certificate that confirms that we have successfully completed a course of study and earned an advanced degree (not necessarily a master’s degree) is called a “diploma.” You can say, “I plan to earn a diploma in marketing,” or, if you have completed the degree, “I have a diploma in economics.” But if you do, realize that a native English speaker will not necessarily understand which graduate degree you have earned.

– The most appropriate verbs to use with “master’s degree,” prior to receiving the degree, are “study for,” “earn,” or “pursue.” So, you should say, “I plan to study for a master’s degree in communications,” or “I plan to earn a master’s degree in marketing,” or “I plan to pursue a master’s degree in engineering.”

This may seem like a minor matter in terms of language. However, making the most common mistakes can lead a university official or IELTS examiner to think less of your English …

Three Benefits of Private High Schools

Are you a parent who children are getting ready for a new school year? Are you troubled by the prospect of sending them to a public institution? If so, then it might be beneficial for you to consider sending them to one of the private high schools in your area. There are several benefits to this type of education. First, these institutions are generally better funded than their public counterparts, they employ high quality teachers, and they are free from any outside political influence. For all of these reasons, they make an excellent option for your children's education.

When it comes to funding, private high schools generally do much better than public institutions. While they may be more expensive, this is more than made up for the quality of their facilities and the resources that they make available for students. The educational opportunities that they offer are greatly enhanced due to the availability of quality textbooks, scientific equipment, and classroom technology. So, if you are looking to equip your children with as many resources as possible, these institutions hold a definite advantage.

You will also be very pleased with the quality teachers that private high schools employ. In general, these institutions offer higher wages for their teachers, and, as a result, they are able to attract more candidates for their positions. This results in the acquisition of extremely well qualified instructors who are able to offer some of the very best educational opportunities to your children.

Finally, private high schools are also free of some of the outside political influences that public institutions have. Since public institutions operate on government money, they are accountable to the local politicians. In recent years, the political environment has changed dramatically, and this has been resolved in a decrease in funding to educational programs. As a result, the expectations for public institutions have changed dramatically, and much of the public curriculum is focused on answering the political demands that are being made. This leads to educational institutions that are focused on meeting certain quantifiable outcomes rather than offering a quality education. This problem can be avoided by choosing a non-public institution.

Overall, private high schools offer several advantages over their public counterparts. So, it is important that you take these into consideration when deciding where to send your children as they may offer a much better option for your student's education. You will surely be grateful for the opportunities that they afford. …

How To Find Public Speaking Engagements And Become Successful In Your Career

How many new customers or clients do you want to attract this year? Well, I have found that using public speaking is a very effective marketing tool that can bring in new business.

So, if public speaking is so effective, why isn’t everyone using public speaking to attract new customers and clients? Here, there are two main reasons: 1. People haven’t learned how to overcome their fear of public speaking. 2. Nobody ever told them that public speaking was a great way to find new customers. So, they never bothered to use it.

Now there are “four main tips” that will help you become a confident speaker. Who gets speaking engagements:

Tip #1

“Goals” – Determine what specific goal you want to achieve by giving many speeches. – Example: Perhaps you want to attract 100 new customers or clients in the next twelve months.. Also, by choosing a specific goal, you will find it easier to determine the number of speeches you will need to give to attain your goals. I have found that most speakers should give between 50 to 150 speeches per year. This will help them attain their goals.

Tip #2

“Have A Slow And Safe Way To Practice Your Speeches”. – Most speech classes or training groups tend to have you give a long speech to a group of people. This is not an effective training method. It is better to let people feel safe and develop slowly by giving short speeches of a one minute or two minute duration. When the new speaker feels more confident, they will then be eager to try a five minute or ten minute speech. So, let each person develop at their own pace. Many shy people, have overcome their fear of public speaking, by using this kind of “slow and safe” method. – Eventually, they will be excited about giving a 30 minute speech.

Tip #3

“Willingness To Give Speeches” – I find that most new speakers have not committed to giving a certain amount of speeches each year. When I ask them if they are willing to give one speech each week for the next four weeks, they usually will not commit to it. So, if they will not give speeches for the next four weeks, then they definitely will not commit to giving 50 speeches in a one year period. On the other hand, there are speakers who are excited about achieving their goals and they commit to giving over 100 speeches each year.

So, start slowly, and see if you are willing to give 50 speeches in the next 12 months. I think that you will get more excited about giving speeches, as you find that public speaking is helping you achieve your goals.

Tip #4

“Knowing How To Make A Profit From Your Speeches” – Here are some questions that you will need to ask yourself:

1. How do I find 50 speaking engagements each year?

2. How do I give speeches for free, in order …

What You Need to Know About a Career As a Network Engineer

Network engineering is a process in which an independent contractor or company will determine the internetworking requirements for switched networks and then develop and implement the hardware or software in order to meet the needs of the system’s users. Network engineers are the spines of the computer infrastructure for any business. The larger businesses have the ability to employ several network engineers whereas other smaller businesses often hire a consultant who is summoned only when the network has problems or needs an update.

In order to join the team of network engineers, you must have the necessary skills as well as a love of computers. As with any other career, you also need to follow certain steps in order to accomplish your goal. These are the top five requirements needed to become a network engineer.

1. While you’re in college, take another computer related field. Although it’s called network engineering you don’t need an engineering degree. You also have the option of studying a totally different major or minor than information technology (IT).

2. While in school, try and hook a job in the campus IT office. Some colleges hire students as IT support techs that work in the dorm and classroom environments. The job usually counts as part of your computer studies and it is a great opportunity to build up your resume.

3. Learn how all different types of operating systems work. This is important because there are many businesses that use different systems for their computers and company laptops as well. Make sure to familiarize yourself with all of them, otherwise you will not be the broad-based network engineer that companies will hire.

4. If you get an internship, try and pick a company that specifically has an IT department or is an IT consulting firm. There are a lot more students majoring in the computer-related industries these days. That’s why the experience you acquire needs to be a cut above the rest.

5. Communication is a key element in a networking engineer’s career. Therefore, if this is the profession that you choose, you will often be working with others that are not as tech savvy as you will be. You need to be able to speak your special lingo in laymen’s terms. If you have a problem with communication, perhaps taking a communications skills class can help you improve.

There are the chosen few that have had the ability to become engineers without a college degree. These individuals have been able to use their innate computer knowledge to gain some success in the field. However, are usually in the minority of network engineers because many who study on their own will lack other essential skills needed for this profession. Employers looking to hire a network engineer will most likely go for the one who holds the degree. They want to hire an engineer that will be able to adapt to many different scenarios and handle various issues that might arise. Network engineers that hold degrees have …

According to Toffler (1970) "the illustrators of the 21st century will not be those who can not read and write, but those who can not learn, unlearn and relearn". Lifelong learning is about learning, unlearning and relearning through acquiring and updating all kinds of abilities, interests, knowledge and qualifications from the pre-school years to post retirement.

Learning means the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or being taught. Unlearning is seen as deleting and replacing obsolete knowledge. Relearning means learn material that has been previously learned and then forgotten. Lifelong learning activities promote the development of knowledge and competencies that will enable adaptations to knowledge-based societies, while at the same time valuing all forms of learning. Lifelong learning (LL) is there an indicative guiding principle of educational development.

The commonly understood definition of lifelong learning is' all learning undertaken through life which is on-going, voluntary and self-motivated in the pursuit of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies for either personal or professional reasons.

Barry Sanders did not start playing running back for his high school football team until the fourth game during his senior year.
