Whitefish Bay High School has shifted to temporary virtual learning, effective Oct. 26, due to an increased number of COVID-19 close contact quarantines of high school staff.
In an Oct. 25 letter to parents, Whitefish Bay School District Superintendent John Thomsen said that all students and staff would do full virtual learning through Oct. 28. The school planned to return to its hybrid model of combining in-person and virtual learning on Nov. 2. He said parents would be notified as soon as possible in the change to this plan.
“At this point in time, we do not have sufficient staffing to continue effective in-person learning options,” Thomsen said.
High school parent-teacher conferences scheduled for Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 will occur as previously scheduled. They will be held virtually. All students will be off Oct. 29 and 30, as previously scheduled.
“As difficult as these transitions may be, the District is committed to continuing learning temporarily in our full virtual modality. Engaging in the virtual modality this week will maximize the health and safety of our students and staff, and stabilize the high school operations,” Thomsen wrote.
Cumberland Elementary, Richards Elementary and Whitefish Bay Middle School will continue in the hybrid model for the week.
“Be reminded it is essential that students and staff stay home if they feel ill; wash hands often, continue to wear a mask; and be mindful of your physical distance. These strategies will allow the District to maintain an in-person modality option as much as possible throughout the pandemic,” Thomsen wrote.
All high school staff will report to the school to deliver virtual learning unless they are under health department quarantine. Further direction to students and staff will come from Whitefish Bay High School principal Amy Levek, Thomsen wrote.
