Should College Student-Athletes Be Paid?

Should College Athletes be Paid? Hold It!!!… Maybe There’s A Better Way

With the ongoing increasing conversations pertaining to college student-athletes, of whether they should be paid as professionals, or remain amateurs, I thought it take a moment to sit down and jot down some of my thoughts.

Here in the northwest, there is recent conversation in regards to a couple of our local universities, University of Washington and Washington State University (my alma mater) as to if their respective star players (UW’s Isaiah Thomas and WSU’s Klay Thompson) should return for their senior years of go Pro.

I admit to being a little bit “old school” when it comes to implementing success strategies to keep our young people on track for success. As the author of a just completed book “Standing above the Crowd: “Execute Your Game Plan to Become the Best You Can Be”, that keeps the focus on the tried-and-true traditions of hard work, goal setting, dedication and positive attitude, I feel that those things along with my own personal life experience of being a collegiate student- athlete help me to have a perspective from the many different points of view pertaining to this conversation.

My Beginning as a Student Athlete:

Athletes are the prized and celebrated few of our society. From the time that most top-level athletes are in the fourth or fifth grade, they have already been identified as those that have a great opportunity in the world of sports. At that point they become coddled, pampered, and “taken care of” in ways that the average individual can only imagine. Many times athletes who are full of athletic potential don’t have the same scholastic expectations placed upon them from the time they’re in middle school and all the way through college. Is that fair? I guess I’d say it’s fair only if it works out well for the athlete, his family and the university of their choice before heading on to the pros. Unfortunately, that is where we as a society place our values, instead of on the student who gets straight “A’s”. But, many times it doesn’t work out that way for the “hot-shot” athlete, and you only hear about the perhaps 10% of athletes who actually ascend to the top of the pyramid of the hundreds of thousands of scholar athletes throughout this country (middle school through collegiate sports). The vast majority of student-athletes will perhaps play on their high school varsity team, their collegiate athletic teams, and far fewer in the professional ranks. It’s been said it’s easier to become a brain surgeon that it is a professional athlete.

I was a late starter as a student-athlete, so I wasn’t one of the pampered ones that were targeted for athletic success from middle school on. Matter of fact I didn’t play my first organized basketball game until I was a senior in high school. So, I missed out on all the “wining and dining”, “coddling and pampering”, and, “wooing and recruitment” that …

How Good is Online Education?

No body wants to remain uneducated in today's world as education is considered a very important part of their lives. Education can either rise you to a certain height or cause ua downfall in the future depending on the practitioners you choose. Education is great different today in comparison to the 1950s because of advances in teaching and other great inventions that provide easier techniques of teaching. With advances in the today's world a major development with education has also taken place and that is distance learning or online education.

Online education has become a widely accepted alternative to learning in the classroom. Distance education has helped students to educate themselves in a world where technology rules and fast paced lifestyles are a part of life. There are many formats through which distant learning could be made available such as online Power Point Presentations, Videos on tapes, CD's, DVDs, or other internet courses format that is put online. Online education has been gaining popularity through out the years because of the ease of the internet. The internet has made it easier for people to stay connected and has provided people with unlimited resources on the World Wide Web. Many educators have mixed feelings about online educating there are so many pros and cons to the issue.

Mary Kassop, an author and educationalist, gives general overview of online education and support it. He writes, Can students learn as much and as well online as they do in face to face courses? The answer to these questions is not just 'yes,' but one can there are many ways that online courses may actually surpass traditional face to face classes in quality and rigor. "Mrs. Kassop, as an online education supporter, is correct on the issue because it can provide a good education to many people. The convenience of online courses provide busy individuals a chance to get the equal amount of education as a student going to class and all that is needed to get started is a computer with internet access. One computer can open the gates to a whole new world of learning and excitment.

Online education now is either offered by private entities or there are many city and university colleges that offer these programs. Some Colleges and schools offer programs such as Psychology and Sociology which are equal to or even better then face to face classes. One example of a class that is better online rather than face to face is Sociology because they let the students observe human communication at public spaces without the teacher being there.

Online education could be the tool of the future to provide the young and the old with schooling and instruction. It provides a cheaper way of teaching while still giving the student the …

Post 9/11 GI Bill Changes – Military Students Can Attend Online Universities

Millions of military veterans have used the GI Bill throughout the decades in order to obtain an education and better their future. The GI Bill has seen numerous revisions and updates throughout the years. Let’s take a look at the changes in the latest post 9/11 GI Bill.

One of the biggest changes is that veterans have more options available. Now they can choose from apprentice programs, vocational schools, technical institutions and even online colleges with distance learning programs. This new change is expected to help veterans deal with unemployment. Experts predict that approximately thirteen thousand veterans would be able to secure employment within a year thanks to vocational training. These vocational programs are suitable for veterans who want to secure employment as soon as possible and who aren’t looking for a job that requires a four year degree.

These new changes will allow veterans to obtain very specific training which should help them to obtain jobs. The government is broadening the options for schooling with the intention of reducing unemployment for veterans; women in particular. Statistics provided by the U.S Department of Labor show that 16.6 of female veterans are currently unemployed. In order to combat the problem of unemployment, the current administration has introduced Obama’s American Job Act which provides a tax credit for any company who hires an unemployed veteran.

Changes have also been made in regards to “break pay”. This means that students will not receive benefits between enrollments. Students benefiting from the Montgomery GI Bill have the ability to switch over to the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Housing stipends used to be only available to students attending traditional 4-year universities and colleges. However, now students enrolled in an online education program will also be able to qualify for benefits. This new stipulation will go into effect as of October of 2011. The Post 9/11 GI Bill allows for a stipend of one thousand dollars per year towards school books. Changes have also been made to cap out tuition for those attending a private university at $17,500. As a result, some students who are currently enrolled at a private university may have to pay some of their own way or obtain student loans.

The GI Bill was signed into law in 1944 in order to assist World War II veterans with university and vocational training. It also helped to provide veterans with access to various loan programs. One of the most significant part of the program was the home loan program which enabled a large number of Americans to purchase a home for the first time.…

Photo 101: Why You Should Choose an Online Education

Traditional universities and colleges are never going to disappear, however it's easy to see why more and more people are heading to cyberspace for their education. While online education requires students to be self-disciplines, organized and tech-savvy, it is possible for students to get a good education without ever setting foot in a traditional classroom.

Here are five reasons why you should consider an online education.

1. Flexibility

Taking online courses are great for people who need to work, but still want to earn a college degree. Online universities are flexible for students who have other commitments (like work or family). Students can 'attend' class while the kids are napping, on a lunch break or on the road for business. Online classes are great because you are not required to be in a classroom three nights a week at 6 pm sharp for the next 4 years of your life – but you can still get the same level of education. Do not be fooled, just because you do not have to go to class does not mean you do not have to work. You still have to do the work, you just get to decide when and where you do it.

2. Pace Yourself

Another advantage of online education is the ability for students to work at their own pace. E-learning generally focuses on student-centered learning, making it up to you to decide how you learn best. You can study at the same time each day for a set time, or you can use the course chat boards to talk to other students and your instructors. The chat boards are really nice for students who are timid and do not speak up in class. For some reason, it's easier to express yourself via chat.

3. Save Money

Most online education programs actually charge less than traditional universities. Take some time to look around the Internet and you'll discover online classes are inexpensive compared to regular college programs. Because online education is so much cheaper, when you finish your education you will not have to be laden with huge student loans like most college students. Getting an online education can actually save you lots of money.

4. No Commute

Not only can you save money in your coursework by pursuing an online education, you also save tons of money and hours driving yourself to and from school each day. One of the best things about online education is getting to learn from the comfort of your home – sweats and all. So, no more stressing about being to your 7 am class on time, instead, sleep in and study when you wake up. You'll also save money on eating out for those 'convenience meals,' childcare and gas. Paying your monthly Internet bill is a small price to pay for your college education.
