When some people go home and watch television, others use the free time to push the best out of every second of their life. Such a man was Asimov, for how else can somebody write more than 465 books in a single life time?

The Man

Isaac Asimov was born in the Soviet Union in 1920. That made him a communist and if he stayed in Russia his work might have been unknown to the world. However he did not and he ended up in America in 1923. He grew up in New York City. His writing career was intense if you look at the subjects he covered. Science, Mathematics, History, Literature, Humor, Social Science and other subjects.

His work

He was never a shy writer. He used as many words as he could but they all made sense. His science fiction was written with a grasp of the basics of mathematics and science. This way he could imagine a Lunar based civilization and write a story about that. This story would include so much science that years later you would find the plot become a reality. Asimov was no fortune teller and from some of his works you get a sense that he despised such practices. One is a lengthy article about the effect of the moon on the menstruation cycle of a woman. Through a series of fact and persuasive educated arguments, he showed that the effect is minimal if any.

His fears

Asimov admitted that the year 2000 would be the science fiction year. The triple O that would mark the beginning of a millennium. He mentioned in his book; Asimov s Chronology of the World, that since a child this fascinated him. At a point he wonders where he would be during this time. He would be 80 years old and as he himself knew that was a bit over the life expectancy of human beings. The year was 1989 as he wrote that and he believed his health might just favor his chances.

Isaac Asimov wrote more than 3000 essays and nearly 400 short fiction pieces.

His legacy

Sadly he died in 1992. Versatile in imagination, but firmly rooted in science, any piece Asimov wrote can be enjoyed. Strangely in an earlier book he mentioned that:

When you think about it, when you get out of college with a bachelor degree in math, what can you possibly do with it besides teach? You're certainly not prepared for any practical applications. Sure, you could get a job as an actuary but is that REALLY why you majored in math in the first place? Well, for those of you who still want to get a bachelor degree in math, hang onto your hats because the ride you're in for is far from easy. What follows is pretty much what you can expect to go through.

Math is probably one of the hardest discriminates anyone could possibly want to go through. The math courses alone are so hard that no other courses are needed to make your four years of college a living nightmare. Think we're kidding? Take a look at just the math curriculum itself and then decide if this is something that you think you can tackle with no sweat.

Your first two semesters of college math throw you right into the fire. This is where you learn Calculus. The courses are usually Calculus I and II. Calculus is probably one of the most difficult courses ever devised by man. How anyone even thought of this stuff is a puzzle. Talk about math that you're never going to use in your life unless you become a scientist or an engineer.

Your next two semesters, or year two, give you a break from calculus. This is where you take Advanced, or Abstract Algebra. This is where you learn about matrixes and things like that. This is more math that you're never going to use as long as you live. Engineers do not even use most of this stuff.

Now you've reached three years and you're back to Calculus again. This is where you finish up your training in Calculus with Calculus III and IV. The concepts in these courses are so abstract and so far removed from any real world math, you've got to near a genius to understand this stuff.

By year four, if you're still a math major, you're down to what they call "Independent Research" where you basically are on your own, but under the guidance of your advisor. You'll do some kind of major paper on math principals or maybe even Newton for all you know. The good thing is, what you write on is up to you. The bad thing is it has to be approved by your advisor.

And if all of this is not bad enough, you've only taken 8 of your 32 courses. You still have 24 more courses to fill in your time with. Because you've chosen one of the science majors, you're also going to have to take at least two semesters of either chemistry, physics or some other related science. Bachelor Degree – BA Vs. BS

There are a lot of people who wonder why some bachelor degrees, when you get them, designate you as a bachelor of arts and other bachelor degrees designate you as a bachelor of science. Well, the answer is very simple.

A Bachelor of Arts degree goes to somebody who gets a bachelor degree in any non-technical, or science related field. A Bachelor of Science degree goes to somebody who does get a degree in a science related field. The designations are set up by the colleges themselves.

So, what’s the difference? Does it really matter?

The answer to that question may shock you. It matters very much.

The reasons will not be immediately apparent to the student, but when he or she goes into the real world to get a job, they are going to be in for a rude awakening if they’re looking for a specific type of job and don’t have a bachelor of science degree.

If you’re scratching your head wondering why this even matters, the answer is as follows. Most Bachelor of Science programs are a little more intense than a Bachelor of Arts program. In other words, in addition to the degree having to be in a science related field, the degree itself will contain more required courses than a Bachelor of Arts degree. Of course this varies from college to college, but within each school the bachelor of science program is always more intense than the bachelor of arts program. There may be one more required course per semester, or more science courses required. The bottom line translation is, the program is harder to get through; in some cases, a lot harder.

So why does this matter? Well, there are certain jobs, such as in the fields of engineering, chemistry and physics, just to name a few, where if you look in the classified ads in your local paper, it will clearly say, “bachelor of science degree required”. So if you graduated college with a bachelor of arts degree, you won’t be able to apply for that job. Oh, you can still send in your resumé, but don’t expect to be called in for an interview.

Now, here is where this becomes very important. There are some colleges that will allow you to get a Bachelor of Arts degree in math, which is technically one of the sciences. The program doesn’t have as many requirements. So when you graduate, while you technically have a degree in one of the sciences, because of the fact that you don’t have a bachelor of science degree, you will not be eligible for that particular job that says “bachelor of science degree required”.
