The Demise Of Math Education And Engineering In America – There Is A Way To Reverse This Trend

In a world where advanced knowledge is widespread and low-cost labor is readily available, America's advantages in the marketplace of engineering and science technology have begun to erode. There's a way for students to enhance their math skills while still in high school. I suggest every high school student interested in upgrading their math skills to enroll in a drafting class. Curriculum advisors should encourage more high schools to offer drafting classes, with emphasis on designing small projects and constructing the design. In my opinion, this is a sure fire way to get students interested in engineering and understanding math. Speaking from self experience, enrolling in a drafting course made math easier to understand. After finishing a drafting course, I highly encourage the student to take a Computer Aided Drafting Design (CADD) course. Most colleges and technical institutions offer drafting and CADD together as one course. The student will be introduced to 3D modeling, 3D animation, desktop publishing, ADA codes and guidelines, and much more. The avenues to engineering knowledge goes on and on.

This is my driving force for writing this article; when I witnessed Mr. Bill Gates of MicroSoft Inc. (www.microsoft.com) testifying to the US Congress stating, "we need to import engineers from third world countries, because there's a shortage of qualified engineers in America", hit me in the gut like a ton of bricks. Before I go any further, I want to make it crystal clear I view Mr. Gates with the utmost of respect in regards to his generosity to underprivileged people, and his computer business Savvy to grow MicroSoft into one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world. With that said, we all know, or we all should know, importing engineers from third world countries will drive the salary down for engineers graduating from prestigious engineering institutions like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (www.mit.edu) and Virginia Tech (www. vt.edu), that's a fact.

A brief history about CADD, CADD was originally introduced as a replacement for the traditional drafting board. I was introduced to CADD in 1980, using a CADD system by the name of Auto-Trol (www.auto-trol.com); the system I used was a DOS based system, no pull down menus and no color. All commands had to be typed in from your keyboard, if you wanted to draw a line or circle, you had to manually type it in, and make sure your spelling was correct. Later I worked on a CADD system by Sun Micro Systems (www.sun.com), which enhanced my knowledge in regards to 3D capability. Then along came AutoCAD !!! (www.autodesk.com), which in my opinion blew the lid off of Computer Aided Drafting. All of a sudden you had pull down menus, short cuts, and color. Real Time Air Pollution Data Collection And The Future Of Environmental Science

Imagine being able to collect air-pollution data and greenhouse gas data in real-time in our nation's cities and in the lower atmosphere, imagining collecting all this data and storing it in the cloud? Is it possible? Well, it is a lot more possible now that it ever has been before, thanks to UAVs, Airliners, Automobiles, Smart Phones, Cloud Computing, Sensor Technology and the will of the people. Let's discuss some of the newest developments.

You see there was an interesting new piece of research which just came out published in a well-known science journal; "A Sensor Array for the Detection and Discrimination of Methane and Other Environmental Pollutant Gases Ami Hannon," by Yijiang Lu, Jing Li, and M. Meyyappan; 25 July 2016. The abstract stated:

"We address the sensitive detection and discrimination of gases impacting the environment, such as CH4, NH3, SO2, and CO, using a sensor array and aided by principal component analysis (PCA) A 32-element chemiresistive sensor array consisting of nine different sensor materials including seven types of modified single-walled carbon nanotubes and two types of polymers have been constructed. PCA results demonstrate excellent discriminating ability of the chemiresistor sensor chip in the 1-30 ppm concentration range. collected using cavity ring down spectroscopy. The sensor chip has also been integrated with a smartphone and has been shown to reproduce the sensing performance obtained with the laboratory measurement system. "

We already have UAVs that have been used to collect atmospheric data, along with aircraft filled with sensors, now that these sensors are getting smaller and smaller they can be embedded into average everyday smart phones. Imagine if all this data was collected along with the GPS data, and all in real-time?

Maybe, we can tackle the real problems of air pollution without pretending we know all the answers and deal with it regionally, where the pollution is created and those air molecules that are really problematic over those which have been just labeled as "evil" by the Status Quo of the United Nation's IPCC. By truly knowing where the problems are, we can better combat the real problems to human health in cities around the world like; Mumbai, Shanghai, Beijing, Mexico City and others. With the help of NASA satellites and a net-centric strategy of mobile sensors using geo-data all connected to the cloud and sophisticated ERSI software, we can get this done, and do it right. In considering going into the nursing profession, there are a few priorities that are crucial to determining future success. If someone is considering obtaining an Associates Degree in Nursing from a non accredited nursing school, then if they decide to go on to their Bachelors of Nursing, they will find that they can not continue. The reason for this is due to the following; an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, requires and accredited degreed Nursing Program from the two year Associate Degreed Nurse. What this assumes is that the two years Associate Degreed Nurse who graduated from a non accredited nursing school will not be able to transfer in their nursing courses to the four year university.

How to Write Science Fiction – Character Creation

When it comes to character creation, witch is one part that you should really know when it comes to how to write science fiction, I see that many people think that it is very hard, or it is very complex etc … But I will show you that in fact it is something easy, and that you can do it quickly.

When you start to create your characters keep in mind that you should always create a full story for them. Most people just do it as they write or just make some small notes about them, witch is totally wrong. The real power is in the story. Basically you should build a life for your character. You have to know what his childhood was like, what kind of parents he had ?, was he poor ?, was he rich? etc … I can keep going on an on about this. You might think that this is not necessary or that it is stupid to do, but let me tell you that it would help a lot more than you think when you actually start to write your science fiction.

You have to know all the details behind your character so you can write more detailed stuff about him and also you can even base a part of your main storyline on his story. This is a powerful technique that a lot of good writers use and it is a very successful one.

Another thing I recommend doing, is looking for real persons to inspire you. Like heroes and stuff like that. Do some research about some guy in real life, or in history and just adapt some of his life / story to your character. This technique will make your character a lot more "real", thus making the reader understand more about him and who he is.

when we have to say, the results are in, and I was wrong.

Neuroscientists go against type (Homo sapiens), and immediately publish

They opposed the iconic vision of Homo sapiens as the embodiment of logic, reason and analysis, by what they called the Somatic Market Hypothesis. It is a fancy name

for adding your right-brain emotions and feelings to your left-brain reasoning skills.

The Damasios go on to propose emotions are represented by changes in your body state. For the geniuses: specifically two areas in your brain; your somatosensory cortex and your orbitofrontal cortex.

Who Cares

First, emotions and instincts occur through your right brain, and are at a non-conscious level (no awareness).

Second, your mental imagery is deeply involved in decision-making. When you

are beset by negative images, you decide differently than when your mental movies

are positive and offer successful reinforcement. Remember, images precede your

feelings and emotions, and result in different behaviors. Think about it.

One more once. Your orbitofrontal cortex is the basis of your reasoning,

logic and lineal Cost-Benefit Analysis. But it is only one piece of the jigsaw

puzzle.

Amygdala

It is your Amygdala, located in the Limbic system of your brain,

and responsible for your emotions and feelings, plus your somatosensory/insula

cortices,and peripheral nervous system, that are the other critical

structures for decision making. It is left and right brain integration.

How to Fool a Breathalyzer

Want to trick a breath machine into a low test result? Or make sure that you’re not causing a false high reading? Not that difficult, says a law firm of San Diego DUI attorneys and lawyers: just control your breathing.

The simple fact is that these breath machines which determine guilt or innocence in DUI cases are not exactly the reliable devices that law enforcement would have us believe. There are dozens of factors that can cause false test results. An example of that unreliability is the fact that the results will vary depending upon the breathing pattern of the person being tested. This has been confirmed in a number of scientific studies.

In one, for example, a group of men drank moderate doses of alcohol and their blood-alcohol levels were then measured by gas chromatographic analysis of their breath. The breathing techniques were then varied. The results indicated that holding your breath for 30 seconds before exhaling increased the blood-alcohol level by 15.7%. Hyperventilating for 20 seconds immediately before the analyses of breath, on the other hand, decreased the level by 10.6%. Keeping the mouth closed for five minutes and using shallow nasal breathing resulted in increasing the blood-alcohol level by 7.3%, and testing after a slow, 20-second exhalation increased levels by 2%. Dr. Michael Hlastala, Professor of Physiology, Biophysics and Medicine at the University of Washington has gone farther and concluded:

“By far, the most overlooked error in breath testing for alcohol is the pattern of breathing… The concentration of alcohol changes considerably during the breath… The first part of the breath, after discarding the dead space, has an alcohol concentration much lower than the equivalent BAC (blood-alcohol concentration). Whereas, the last part of the breath has an alcohol concentration that is much higher than the equivalent BAC. The last part of the breath can be over 50% above the alcohol level… Thus, a breath tester reading of 0.14% taken from the last part of the breath may indicate that the blood level is only 0.09%.” 9(6) The Champion 16 (1985).

Many police officers know this. They also know that if the machine contradicts their judgement that the person they arrested is intoxicated, they won’t look good. So when they tell the arrestee to blow into the machine’s mouthpiece, they’ll yell at him, “Keep breathing! Breathe harder! Harder!” As Professor Hlastala has found, this ensures that the breath captured by the machine will be from the bottom of the lungs, near the alveolar sacs, which will be richest in alcohol. With the higher alcohol concentration, the machine will give a higher — but inaccurate — reading.…
