The Psychology of Starting a Career

It strikes me that just about every impressive public speaker that I have ever seen has given the impression of having energy to burn. Enthusiasm is contagious and people seem to respond positively to those who radiate energy.

Further enforcement this notice includes research that suggests that a whooping 93% of communications involves information other than words. This includes visual senses as well as the tone and pitch of ones' voice.

In my experience people in general are well tuned to these non-verbal signals. Have you ever walked into a room where a friend or family member has asked "what's wrong?" – even before you have spoken a word? Or has anyone commented that you look tired despite your best efforts to hide the fact?

Understanding your non verbal communications will serve you well at the beginning of your career. Because there is often very little difference between entry level job mandates in terms of prior experience there is usually a higher emphasis on potential rather than immediate value to the organization.

And one key factor in identifying potential is the job mandates' willingness to learn, listen and adapt. Not only does genuine positive energy convey enthusiasm but it also helps to subconsciously convince the employer of untapped potential even before a word is spoken. And given that only 7% of communication involves words it is theoretically possible to convince an employer that you are the most suitable candidate even without the most elegant rhetoric.

But beware the gotcha. Remember we mentioned that most people are well tuned to non-verbal signals? This means that it would be difficult to fake enthusiasm or energy. You may think that you can achieve that without much problem. But over the course of a nerve-racking one hour interview the cracks are sure to surface.

Indeed, the best way to ensure that you portray the right energy levels and attitude through the entire interview is to actually have the right energy levels and attitude. This means ensuring at least a few good nights sleep prior to the interview and living life in a positive way. Develop a keen interest in the company that is interviewing you and communicate your findings to them so that they can see that you have been proactively preparing yourself for the occasion.

As you can see, what I am trying to say is that the phycology of starting a career starts at home. Living, learning and enjoying the challenges of life helps you to prepare what is probably the single most important characteristic of a great job candidate – your perceived attitude. …

Career Coaching Vs Career Counseling – What’s the Difference?

So what’s the difference between career counseling and coaching?  If you are like many people these days who are in work transition, this distinction may come in handy.

The truth of this is that many career counselors and coaches may be very similar and in both lines of work there are variations in practitioners which may make them more like one than the other.    However, in counseling in general, there is an assumption that someone (the counselor) is an expert and has expertise to offer.  And this can inherently make it somewhat more of a directive approach.  Meaning that the counselor may gather information about their client’s skills, style, likes, etc and then direct them to a line of work that the counselor thinks they will be satisfied with.  A counselor would be more likely to have a list of possible career-paths and to know all sorts of resources for you to get information, pay rates for different fields, etc.

A coach fundamentally comes from the perspective that you are the expert in your life and it is the job of the coach to support you to grow, develop and make powerful choices for yourself, including career choices.  So, in the coaching model it would likely be more about self-discovery, finding what career will really light you up, have you excited to go to work each day.  And then your coach would ask you the right questions to make sure you put together a plan that will have you investigating different career choices and pursuing them so that you can come to your own answers.  The idea and the key distinction is that if the client comes to the answers on their own, it is potentially more powerful than if they are told by the career counselor a recommendation or prescribed course.

With all of this being said, the most important thing in choosing either a career counselor or a coach is that you feel chemistry and feel good about the person’s ability to support you in this very important aspect of your life.  So, don’t be afraid to interview a career coach and a counselor (or multiple) to see which is best for you…tell them about yourself, what you like about work, what you don’t and any details about your situation.  At the end of the call, ask yourself-do I feel empowered and confident in this person.  You don’t need to hire the first person you speak to.  Speaking to a handful of coaches and counselors will only take a couple hours of your time and can pay off greatly if you find the right relationship to guide you to making the best career choices for you.…

Going to Beauty School Seen As An Attractive Career Choice

Whether you're seeking to change or begin a new career, becoming a cosmetologist offers a rewarding option for a satisfying profession that is in constant demand. Best of all, Cosmetologists enjoy being a part of a service business that helps others look and feel great about their personal appearance.

According to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), cosmetology and aesthetics comprise a healthy, growing industry that generates over $ 60 billion a year in revenue for those in the beauty industry.

Depending on the state you plan to work in, becoming a licensed cosmetologist requires completing a set of practice hours and passing a state board exam in cosmetology. The number of practice hours will vary based on the type of services you wish to provide. Licensed cosmetologists can provide a variety of personal services which include hair, nails, and skin.

Cosmetology training programs provide all of the education and oversight needed to become a licensed cosmetologist. Instructors at cosmetology programs are accomplished practitioners who have chosen to teach others the skills necessary to seek employment in the beauty industry. Cosmetology programs can vary depending on their areas of specialization. Not all programs will teach every aspect of personal services for hair, nails and skin. Below are list of the major areas of study:

Hair Styling and Design: cutting and styling hair including coloring and use of wigs and hair extensions.

Esthetics: the study of applying makeup and performing facials, massages, waxing and reflexology.

Nail Technology: the study of the art of nail art, design, tips, forms, wraps and gels.

Barbering: cutting and styling of men's hair which may include coloring and beard trimming and shaving.

Electrolysis: a medically recognized permanent hair removal method for face and body.

Teacher Training: instruction to prepare a cosmetologist as teachers of future cosmetologists.

Besides working in an occupation that gives you the personal satisfaction of making others look their best, another benefit is that your salary can be commensurate to the level and class of services that you provide. If you want to go for glamor and the bright lights, you might want to consider working in the entertainment industry as hair stylist and makeup artist. If you want to run your own business, there is plenty of opportunity to open your own salon or work as a contractor in an established salon where the level of pay you receive depends on the clientele you attract and build in your practice.

Another fact to consider, especially during times of tough economic times, is that cosmetology will always be a service service because hair and nails never stop growing. Just like the restaurant business where eating is a primary human need, there is always room for new places to eat out. Likewise there will always be a need for hair salons and barber shops in every community. Also consider that styles are ever changing and the need to keep up with the current trends will provide economic opportunities for those who can provide …

16 Most Inspiring Famous Failures

To succeed in business or life, I came to realize that we must continually take remedial actions. Putting myself on the line day after day can be extremely draining, especially when things do not work out as I desired. Hence, each time I face a disappointing event or undesirable outcome, I NEVER FORGET these famous failures:

1. Bill Gates, founder and chairman of Microsoft, has literally changed the work culture of the world in the 21st century, by simplifying the way computer is being used. He happens to be the world’s richest man for the last one decade. However, in the 70’s before starting out, he was a Harvard University dropout. The most ironic part is that, he started a software company (that was soon to become Microsoft) by purchasing the software technology from “someone” for only $US50 back then.

2. Abraham Lincoln, received no more than 5 years of formal education throughout his lifetime. When he grew up, he joined politics and had 12 major failures before he was elected the 16th President of the United States of America.

3. Isaac Newton was the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has even known. Many thought that Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn’t! When he was young, he did very poorly in grade school, so poor that his teachers became clueless in improving his grades.

4. Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of history’s supreme composers. His reputation has inspired – and in many cases intimidated – composers, musicians, and audiences who were to come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven’s music teacher once said of him “as a composer, he is hopeless”. And during his career, he lost his hearing yet he managed to produce great music – a deaf man composing music, ironic isn’t!

5. Thomas Edison who developed many devices which greatly influenced life in the 20th century. Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S patents to his name. When he was a boy his teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything. When he set out on his own, he tried more than 9,000 experiments before he created the first successful light bulb.

6. The Woolworth Company was a retail company that was one of the original five-and-ten-cent stores. The first Woolworth’s store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and soon grew to become one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting his own business, Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employer would not let him serve any customer because he concluded that Frank “didn’t have enough common sense to serve the customers”.

7. By acclamation, Michael Jordon is the greatest basketball player of all time. A phenomenal …

How to Start Your Accounting Career

You want to be an accountant. You love numbers, maths and money. So, how do you get started? Where do you go to get certified so that your services will be in demand? If you do not have any recognised qualifications, your clients will not be able to know if your standards meet their requirements. People hire Chartered Certified Accountants with a full practicing certificate because they know that they can trust in their expertise.

Any old accountancy certification will not do. You need an internationally recognised global qualification to compete in today’s industry, and the ACCA qualification fits this demand perfectly. The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the world’s largest international accountancy body, with over 300,000 members and students in more than 160 countries. Founded in 1904, ACCA has over 100 years of history as a leader in the development of the global accountancy profession. The United Nations has chosen the ACCA syllabus as the basis of its global accountancy curriculum and the ACCA qualification is well recognised in an ever-growing list of countries including the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Pakistan. Many ACCA graduates work in premier companies such as British Airways and Price Waterhouse Coopers.

The syllabus spans 16 topics each with its own examination to test your competency in that subject. It usually takes 2 years for a student to obtain the ACCA qualification. This is broken up into the “Fundamentals” stage that consists of 9 papers and the “Professional” stage that consists of 3 papers and a choice of 4 options. With so many examinations to pass, self-study can be difficult. The good news is that there are many professional accounting and finance schools such as FTMS Global that offer ACCA courses. The better ones have a cast of highly qualified and experienced lecturers who are ACCA-certified. These teachers know what the ACCA syllabus requires and can dramatically increase your chances of passing the examinations. Definitely, it is highly recommended to enlist the aid of a mentor who can show you the ropes.

After qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant by passing the examinations, to obtain the practising certificate you must have had sufficient experience in a practising accountant’s office. On top of all that, you must continue to keep yourself updated by attending courses on a regular basis. The ACCA is the only accountancy body that provides a disciplinary system which offers remedy if any ACCA member breaches its high standards.

Once you obtain the ACCA certification, your clients know with certainty that they can depend on:

– Your integrity

– Your absolute respect for the confidentiality of your client’s affairs

– Your knowledge and expertise

– The fact that there is a regulatory body who will ensure that standards are maintained

– The fact that you must operate within a strict framework of rules and ethics

The entry requirements of the ACCA qualification are 2 A-Level passes or a …

Florida Win Averts BCS Nightmare

The big question everyone is asking is – what happened to Ohio State? Everyone is talking about how the Gators destroyed the Buckeyes to win the 2006 BCS College Football Championship. The Gators seemed like they were in a different league than the Buckeyes. And, the truth is, they are.

The 41-14 final score makes the game seem closer than it was. Half of the Buckeyes 14 points came from their opening kick-off return. After that play, the Buckeyes were completely dominated in every phase of the game. Florida had 370 total yards to Ohio State's 82. The Buckeyes' Heisman Trophy quarterback Troy Smith was held to only 4 pass completions (2 in each half); 35 passing yards; 1 interception; 0 touchdowns. The BCS Championship game was the worst game in Troy Smith's career.

It's not a coincidence that the National Championship game was also the first time Troy Smith had ever been on the same field with the speed and power of a Southeastern Conference (SEC) football team. I bet a lot of Buckeye players celebrated the day after the game. Celebrated the fact that they will never again play on the same field with a team from the SEC.

There is an old saying that "practice makes perfect." Playing in the SEC, Florida gets lots of practice. In 2006, the Gators had the toughest schedule in the nation (.643 opponents winning percentage). Florida beat four Top-25 teams (LSU, Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee) and lost to a fifth– # 9 Auburn. Additionally, they beat four other bowl teams (Alabama, South Carolina, Kentucky and Florida State). So, before last night's game, the Gators had already played against NINE other bowl teams.

Ohio State? Well, the Buckeyes play in the Big Ten and therefore only faced three Top-25 teams all year. They averaged over 36 points and 410 yards a game against mostly weak opponents. Ohio State simply was unprepared for the talent and intensity of a team like Florida. Gators defensive end Jarvis Moss said after the game that four or five SEC teams could beat Ohio State. I would not go that far, but it is true that all nine SEC teams Florida faced (including Vanderbilt) played the Gators tougher than Ohio State did.

You need more proof the SEC is in a league of its own? OK Since the advent of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system, the SEC leads all conferences (by a wide margin) with a 10-4 BCS bowl game record. SEC teams are an undefeated 3-0 in BCS National Championship games. In this past college football season, the SEC:

1. Led the nation with six teams in the final AP Top-25 poll. No other conference had more than four.

2. In the regular season, the SEC had an incredible 41-7 non-conference record. This .854 non-conference winning percentage was the best in the nation.

3. Had the most teams selected for bowls (9) and the most bowl wins (6). No other conference had more than 4 …

8 Tips To Make Your Career Change A Successful One

Are you one of the many that are seriously considering making a career change, and thinking about the steps needed to make a successful switch? It’s important to have a good plan in place before committing to starting a new career.

A Good Plan and a Long-Term View

It’s best to be sure that the change will bring you and your family happiness, joy, and financial security. A low-stress atmosphere each day is always recommended and beneficial long-term.

Here’s a list of 8 things that I would need to do to make my career change a successful one:

  1. I would make a list of my personal, and family needs or requirements. I’ll include everything that I need to keep myself in a happy and comfy state while I make this career change.
  2. What will I give in exchange for learning and earning in my new career? It is very important to understand that in order to add such an activity as a new career to my life, I need to take the time and energy away from something else and give it to my future pursuit.
I will no doubt have to give up some TV time, maybe not watch television for a few hours per night. I’ll have to give up my wasted computer time of watching YouTube videos about news and entertainment, or I might need to sacrifice a few nights a week and weekends. Many fail because they simply cannot find the time to change. It’s always up to me to take my own time and spend it wisely. This determines my success and speed in reaching my goals.
  3. Do I have what it takes to excel at this new career? I need to be honest with myself. I might have to develop the qualities and characteristics that are necessary in order to thrive and be successful in this new career. An example can be seen in a salesperson. An experienced and successful salesperson will have great communication skills. Whatever product or service they’re selling, they have the skills needed for a solid foundation. Skills like good leadership, organizational skills, and they’re great listeners, able to read their prospect’s minds well. They know how to explain, in a convincing way, how their product or service is perfect for them and something that they just can’t live without. These are all abilities that can be developed and many have sharpened their characters to excel in their profession and have become very successful.
  4. I’ll want to talk to a few people who are currently in the career that I’m considering and ask questions and get a good picture of what it’s like from one day to another in that particular job or career. I’ll make a list of the pros and cons. Some things might sound great and rewarding, but once I do my research my mind might change and see it as less appealing.
  5. It’s easier now than ever before to get educated on just about any career

Modeling Agencies

Modeling agencies play a very big and important role in every model’s career. The agencies act like a link between the model and the fashion industry. There are different types of modeling agencies depending on the kind of model you want to be. There are agencies for male and female models, kids and baby’s models, editorial print models, commercial models, promotional models, plus size models and many other s.

The first step you need to take when looking for a modeling agency is to identify your category. Outline your career goals and then match them to the agency. For instance, if you want to be a plus size model, look for agencies that specifically represent plus size models. If you find the wrong kind of agency, they may turn you away or try to get you to cut down weight. Get an agency that will represent you as you are.

Once you identify your category, start searching for modeling agencies in your area. You can look for agencies from referrals in case you know other models or conduct an online search. However, ensure that you select a legitimate agency. There are many fake agencies running scams so you have to be very careful. Never contact agencies that have posters in public areas or adverts in the classifieds trying to get models. There are many hopeful models in America and so if an agency has to go and look for models; probability is that, it is not legitimate. Most modeling agencies get regular walk-ins.

You can get professional photos to submit to the agencies although if you are a parent trying to sign up your kid or baby, agencies can accept snapshots. Once you have your photos ready, mail them to at least three different modeling agencies with an attachment of your resume. If you know agencies that have open casting calls, go in person; you may get quick feedback if you visit the agencies in person rather than mailing them your applications.

Once you submit your application to the modeling agencies, you will be called back for a meeting before getting signed on for any jobs. If an agent tells you that they have managed to get you a job before meeting you, be very wary of that. Probability is that, the agency is running a scam and they may ask you to pay some drummed up charges for the jobs. During the meeting, the agency will give you the terms and conditions for your representation; ensure you get all these on paper. Read your contract very carefully before signing it, if you have any enquiries about the clauses; ensure that you ask your agent for a clarification.

It’s not so easy to get signed by a modeling agency, sometimes models get turned away from one agency to another. Some agents may tell you that you are too fat, too thin, too tall, and too commercial or they may find other faults to turn you away. You need to be determined …
