Psychology is a people based science – the science of mind and behavior. It is one of the most challenging of professional careers and offers a wide variety of specialties and types of practice.
Psychology is one of the most popular university subjects, and the critical thinking and scientific analysis skills it provides means that a university graduate can employ their skills to, and find employment in a wide range of non psychology related jobs.
Psychology Degree Entry Requirements
If you are looking to complete a university degree in psychology it is essential you check that the relevant body – Health Professions Council and / or British Psychological Society, accept it as an accredited qualification.
This usually means a starting with single honors degree in psychology, completion of which defines eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society.
Places on psychology undergraduate degree courses are considered after and the A level levels / points needed for entry are usually quite high. Although an A Level in psychology is not always required, you should check with the university to which you are applying – most will specify at least one science A Level since the content of a psychology degree is highly science oriented and an ability to grasp the scientific method and the underpinning mathematical and statistical concepts is essential.
Completing an A Level in psychology is, however, a good way to show that you have some understanding of, exposure to and affection for the subject. Consequently your choice of psychology degree will be better informed.
When you come to apply for a Masters degree / Professional Doctoral in your chosen area, a 2.1 in your psychology degree will be the least minimum requirement – even a first class honors degree for very popular courses. Again, competition for places on postgraduate psychology degree courses can be intense s0 some relevant work experience is almost compulsory.
You should also keep checking that the university route you choose will extremely confer eligibility for entry onto the Health Professions Council HPC register. A Post graduate PhD degree, for instance, will not, as it is a research rather than a practitioner degree.
Legal Regulation of Psychologists in the UK
On 1 July 2009 the Health Professions Council (HPC) became the statuary regulator for practitioner psychologists and opened the psychology section of their Register. The Health Professions Council provides a code of conduct which members of the register must abide by.
There are numerous other prefixes which psychologists may use which are not legally recognized or protected such as business psychologist, child psychologist, criminal psychologist, social psychologist, cognitive psychologist, consumer psychologist or animal psychologist, but these are nothing illegal in a person using one of these titles.
The advantage of using a psychologist who appears on the register is that you can have faith in their qualifications and standards of professional conduct. If using a psychologist, it is wise to check the nature of their professional qualifications and status.

Up until a few years ago, I was a university student myself. I lived in the halls of residence for the first year, and then onto rented student accommodation for my remaining 2 years. During these 3 years I realised how valuable student contents insurance can be. The weekend you move into the halls of residence is a crazy one. People are going back and forth, and carrying their valuables back and forth. Unfortunately for someone in the adjacent building, a thief choose to strike at this vulnerable time, and pretty much managed to clear out what had been brought into a student rooms, whilst they were downstairs in the car park, picking up more items to bring to their new residence. Lucky for this student, they had students contents cover, so they were protected, but it was obviously still an issue they would have rather not encountered. Unfortunately, this appears to be a regular thing among student accommodation across the country, as students valuables are at a higher risk of theft here, than at the family home. In fact, recent studies have stated that one in three university students are the victim of crime each year.
When students move away from home, and into student accommodation, they like to bring pretty much everything along with them, so that they have maximum comfort, and are surrounded with the things that their accustomed to, so as to make their stay as easy as possible. In student accommodation, you can typically find all types of items, such as home entertainment systems, clothes, furnishings, money, credit & debit cards, phones, library books and other materials on loan from the university, CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-Ray’s and other media, computer equipment, mp3 players, bicycles, freezers filled with food, microwaves, and even bar fridges.
Fortunately, all of these items can be covered under a good student possessions insurance policy. Not only can the above items be covered, but portable computer equipment, locks and keys, the information stored on your home entertainment equipment or phone, other portable possessions, and even the food within your freezer following its mechanical failure, and your legal responsibilities to 3rd parties as a tenant may also be covered via students possessions insurance.
As can be seen from this list, it’s of paramount importance that all students search for student contents insurance before moving into any student accommodation, so that they can protect the items that are valuable to them with a suitable insurance policy. Being a student, the person might not want the added expense, especially when their funds are limited during this time, but it truly is worth the expense, and if the student shops around, they can easily find a student contents insurance policy which fits their needs, as well as their budget.
If the student is worried about the cost of student contents insurance, with some insurance policy providers they are able to specifically select only the items they want covered, which should lower the premium some amount, and they …

Expert Career Advice: 5 Quick Fixes to Make Your Resume Stand Out
Resumes are such a two edge sword; on one side you are holding in your hand the keys to better financial security, maybe better suited hours for work… in short your entire security for you and your family, then the other side is that boring document, that a family member quickly wrote for you a few years back.
Let me tell you that you are not doing yourself any favors if your resume is over 6 months old! Resumes today have a harder time reaching the employer. Updates and formatting for today’s standard is a MUST!
Automated systems now scan your resume looking for relevant keywords, so if you were wondering why you haven’t had a call for an interview, now you know.
So let’s fix this right now.
1. One Page Resumes are not a thing anymore.
Sure 20 years ago you might be able to fit what you need on one sheet, but in today’s job market professional are complex and recruiters know this. One page resumes will actually hurt your interview chance.
Now this doesn’t mean you can now waffle on and create a war and peace novel out of your resume; your resume needs to be laser focused, something I will discuss in the next fix.
2. Resumes with frickin’ laser beams on them.
A focused resume is necessary because gone are the days when sending out the same resume to 100 different jobs worked. Most companies use an ATS system which scans resumes for keywords.. I’ll let that sink in. Your ‘box standard resume fits all’ is being looked at by a machine first and foremost. Now do you see why you need to have your resume laser focused? Whatever the position is you are going for, your resume needs to be tailored to that position- that automated system is searching for exactly what the recruiter is looking for.
3. Market that email.
Use your email as a chance to make it memorable and I don’t [email protected] Your email can work for you as it appears at the top of your resume (did I mention it HAS to be clickable?)
Consider getting an email for your particular field.
My point here is to get an email to market your particular skills and it shows an employer how serious you are about your field.
4. Professional Experience.
Look at the what the job you are applying for is asking for in a candidate, then ensure you tailor your professional experience section to use those same keywords.
5. Target acquired.
Your resume has to have a target job title. This will appear at the top of your resume and I strongly advise you to tailor that job title target to whatever the job is that you are applying for. This will give the resume automated scanners a great chance of picking your resume up over others.

Following college football's 12th weekend of play, eight teams now becomes harder to ignore-Louisiana Tech, Kansas, West Virginia, Missouri, Ohio State, Arizona State, Hawaii and Boise State. All have only 1 loss except Kansas and Hawaii remain unbeaten.
Sunday night's (11-18-07) new AP Top 25 Poll shown LSU ranked 1st, Kansas 2nd, Missouri 3rd, West Virginia 4th, Ohio State 5th, Arizona State 7th, Hawaii 14th and Boise State 17th.
Monday's (11-19-07) new BCS Standings shown LSU 1st, Kansas 2nd, West Virginia 3rd, Missouri 4th, Ohio State 5th, Arizona State 6th, Hawaii 15th and Boise State 19th.
The AP Poll by sports writers and broadcasters has no affect on who will play in the national championship game.
The BCS standings determine the participants based upon a complicated formula from 3 components: the USA Today coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive College Football Poll, and an average of 6 computer rankings, including the Sagarin Ratings. Each component counts as one-third of a team's overall BCS score in the BCS Standings.
All of that sounds pretty boring and it is, but do not underestimate the importance of the BCS Standings because millions of dollars are at stake. It is not just the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans on Jan. 8, 2008 that generates huge payouts to the teams and conferences involved.
It is also 4 other official BCS Bowl Games as well: the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2008, the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2008, the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2, 2008 and the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3, 2008.
The total payout from the 5 BCS games this year will be $ 85 million and the total economic impact on the 5 hosting cities is estimated at more than $ 1.2 billion.
The bottom line is that at least 10 teams in the top BCS Standings will play in these games. The champions of the 6 major NCAA conferences-the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pacific 10 (Pac 10) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) -are guaranteed a spot in 1 of the 5 BCS games. The other slots are up for grabs under a complicated set of qualifications.
One of those qualifications is that a team outside of the 6 major conferences that finishes in the Top 12 of the final BCS Standings automatically qualifies.
Knowing this salient fact you can better understand why Hawaii (at 15th place) and Boise State (at 19th place) are so upset about their current BCS Standings-though is in the Top 12 despite Hawaii's 10-0 record and Boise State's 10-1 record.
Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson spent most of the rest of his weekend trying to convince "everyone and his dog Spot" about the great win Hawaii had against Nevada, currently rated 97th by Sagarin amongst 119 Division 1A schools. Hawaii finally won 28-26 on a 45-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.
Given the polls and the BCS Standings no one was listening or believing a word Benson had said.

What is life and what is not?
What is "life?" One definition is an organism that can grow, reproduce, and have a metabolism (ongoing chemical reactions) as opposed to a dead organism, or inanimate matter. While this may seem fairly straightforward, it excludes some elements that we may instinctively consider alive. Are seeds that lie dormant for years alive? If they are not, what defines the instant in which they become "alive?" If seeds are already alive, what makes them so? No chemical reactions are occurring, ie no signs of life.
What about so-called gram-positive bacteria that run out of nutrients? When they sense that they can not continue to live, they put their biochemical energy into creating spores. In harsh environments, gram-positive bacterium cease to exist after creating spores. Are bacterial spores alive? Spores, like seeds, can remain dormant for decades with no signs of chemical reactions. Then, they spring to life as bacteria when the environment supplies nutrients, proper environmental conditions, and moisture. These bacteria are genetically identical to the bacteria that produced the spores. If spores are not alive, then what confers life to them resulting in live bacteria?
Can evolution explain life? No. It only depicts how life evolved once there was life. If the fundamental ingredient of the universe were preprogrammed to evolve into life, this would be a new evolution theory. This is what many scientists including Richard Dawkins contend.
The mathematical odds of having the stuff of our universe (at least the stuff we know) "evolve" into life are vanishingly small. Sir Fred Hoyle likened the probability of random emergence of single-celled life to the probability of a Boeing 747 assembling as the result of a tornado whirling through a junkyard. Some scientists say: no problem, just have numerous universes (sometimes an infinite number) each having trillions of planets hosting tornadoes for billions of years. In one of these worlds life will result and evolve to us. Furthermore, since the conditions for life may exist on some of millions of other planets (yes, there could be that many), life might be common in our universe. Almost all of the other universes will be devoid of life. However, this assertion presumes parallel universes or multiverses-hidden worlds along side ours.
Does this explanation debunk spirituality?
Suppose we accept this story of life's beginning. What or who created all these worlds? Why were all these created-so that there would be life? Thus, this seeming bizarre rationalization of how life begun does not address the what, who, or why. Dawkins employs the multiverse conjecture to show how God is a delusion. Wrong! The multiverse argument can be consistent with spiritual teachings which generally include God.
The difference between knowledge, contention, and fact.
Science using accumulated knowledge contends that parallel universes or multiverses may explain the origin of life. Theories should be testable. Even published experiments must be reproducible or be retracted. Many scientists doubt that the concept of parallel universes and multiverses can ever …
When learning abroad, many students gain first-hand apprenticeship into worldly affairs, as well as get insight in other people's cultures. The latter element is usually the main challenge that faces every new learner is setting foot, for the first time, in a foreign country. Often, academia is inseparable from culture and it benefits the person to adjust themselves to changing ways of residents, because this dictates how they will mature socially.
Studying abroad also comes with intellectual insight, which can be gained by understanding the thought and philosophies of the given country. This is quite important in the sense that many syllabuses are often influenced by the intellectual history of a country. One gains a new perspective on global affairs shaped by the thinking style of the nationals. This knowledge can be critical when meeting new people and discussing a nation's policies from an informed point of view, which can be a fulfilling way of spending one's free time. Furthermore, intellectual maturity in a foreign land makes one a spiritual resident because they are one with established thoughts and practices.
Learning abroad also offers the student with a chance to enhance their personal standing in the world. By joining a prestigious university, they gain a career for themselves that assures them of better success in life back in their home country. It is also easy to find a job in the country of study because one already knows how to interact with people there.
Another thing that is gained in this course includes new language skills. This makes the student a competitive communicator and a global citizen who can feature in diplomacy. A foreign tongue also offers one an alternative method of earning money by translating pages part-time. This is also a sophisticated starting point of going into the social scene of a global city. …
