The University Cafeteria

Cafeterias and restaurants are important in university campuses. The largest Cafeteria of the university designed for use by staff, students and visitors is generally the most visited component of a university. It is also a place where students and faculty can take their visitors for a brief coffee break or a lunch hour visit. A well-designed Central cafeteria, housed perhaps in the student center adds to functional efficiency of the university. For here, the lunch hour can be combined with a visit to the bank, post office and the book store along with a friendly exchange of words with colleagues, fellow students, visitors, staff and faculty who may be visiting the same building at the same time. Universities where such centers are not common would do well to plan for it on their campuses.

As mentioned, the ideal location for the central cafeteria of a university is the student center. The student center building containing the cafeteria, along with the administration building can easily be designed as the two largest buildings on a university campus because of their central and essential functions. Both of these buildings need to be accessed from the academic departments as well as by outsiders and vehicles. Therefore, their placement in the university in conjunction with parking areas and the university boulevard has to be incorporated in the master plan. The best location for a student center on a campus is a location close to the administration building but towards the student residential area. It must also be close to the University Boulevard and Visitors Parking area. The building needs to be surrounded by lawns and gardens containing benches for sitting.

The university cafeteria needs to be spacious not just because of the large number of its visitors but also because spacing between tables should ideally be much more than the spacing between tables in an ordinary restaurant. Students often use these tables to read or complete an assignment along with a snack, lunch or dinner. The acoustic design of a university cafeteria should be such as to minimize noise level. Using non-reflecting wall coverings and providing sections of the cafeteria that can be opened to surroundings during busy hours takes care of this need. Music may never be permitted inside a university cafeteria for the same reason. Other sound proof sections of the student center can be designed to permit music.

It may be mentioned that a university cafeteria needs to serve nutritious food at subsidized rates. Its primary clients are students, who are not earning members of society. Two different models for running such cafeterias are prevalent. In the first one, the university gives out a contract to a private caterer. In the second, the university runs its own food services department and runs the cafeteria by hiring the required staff. Both models have inherent limitations. When services are contracted out to a private caterer he gets an assured and captive clientele without having to face competition of the open market. This can, and …

Hunting the Executive Head Hunter

5 tips to win over an executive head hunter or management recruiter

Many job seekers find themselves overwhelmed with dread at the prospect of hunting down a new career position on their own. That's why many people hope to hang their hats on the connections of executive head hunters to do their hunting for them in their ongoing (never-ending?) Quest for the ultimate trophy career.

In order to convince a reliable executive head hunter, a job seeker has to plan his attack. A well connected executive recruiter will not take on just any person in a suit. You have to build a solid foundation well in advance of making contact.

Just like animal-hunting needs supplies, recruiter hunting requires strategy and supplies, too. Here are five tips to successfully capture the prize – the services of an executive recruiter.

Do Your Homework

The savvy job-seeker must be well armed with knowledge – not just about his or her interests and skills, but also in the head hunter's interests and specialties. Yes, it helps to approach a head hunter who understands your field and has built connections, because there is very little need for chemical engineers at an accounting firm (although chemical makers have been forced to allow accountants into their sanctums, but that's another story ).

At the same time, an executive management recruiter has no interest in your skills, even if you have won dozens of awards for the French pastries you have created.

Of course, it helps to familiarize yourself with the job market. That is the executive recruiter's job, but it is also yours.

You will also get a lot further if you have assessed your own skills, not just your desired employment. If you clearly are not qualified for what you seek, you will not sell yourself to the head hunter. And if you can not sell yourself to the head hunter, he or she will not bother trying to sell you to anyone else.

Identify Reputable Executive Recruiters and Head Hunters

Unfortunately, in the 21st century there are a growing number of conmen and scam artists who have injected themselves in the business of executive head hunters and recruiters. Therefore, as you begin your search for a bona fide and qualified executive recruiter, it is vital that you ask around.

Before you approach an executive head hunter, find out all that you can about their operations, history and experience from as many independent resources that you can access. Make it a point to find other men or women who have used their services. Find out who has actually landed jobs for other people, before placing your career in the hands of a charlatan.

Prepare a Solid Resume

OK. so this might be obvious. But it is not always done. Prepare a professional resume before you make contact with the executive head hunters on your list. Your resume is your calling card, and it will determine whether the recruiter will even want to let you waste his …

New Career at 50

Why Not Work From Home?

Are you 50 and trying to start a new career so you can have more financial freedom? Is it time in your life to be able to be your own boss and make your own business decisions? This may be the perfect time to start an online work-at-home business. I spend over 40 years getting up bright and early in the morning and traveling to work 5 sometimes 7 days a week. Since I retired I've been working from home and I love it!

There are five satisfaction factors that I feel you should look at before you begin any work-at-home business venture. These factors can increase your satisfaction of working online at home.

1. Rhythm – Are you a morning person or do you get more energetic in the afternoon? Some of us are total night owls, it's quiet and there are no distractions. I myself after all of the years of getting up early am now sometimes working until 5am because it's just becoming a productive time for me. So plan your work schedule so that you can work when you are most likely to be at your best.

2. Flexibility – Think before making decisions and without having to wait for the red tape machine to approve them. Be on top of the ball rather than behind it. You will learn to think ahead as this is so important and can earn you, or cost you, a lot of money. You need to be flexible and be able to change course from time to time. If somethings not working for you consider your options and always be patient and ready to consider making a change.

3. Authenticity – Set your own goals and be authentic in creating them. Do not use someone else's "been done" ideas and understand clearly why you decided on them. Authentic goals are ones you can really own yourself and be proud of. When you are happy, your business will benefit.

4. Strengths – Do you know what your strengths are? If not, there is a self-assessment exercise out there that can help you identify what your strengths are. Martin EP Seligman, Ph.D., a pioneer in the field of positive psychology, offers a self-assessment exercise to determine your personal strengths from a list of 24 personality traits. You can find the VIA Signature Strengths Questionnaire online at his website, authentichappiness.org. Plan to utilize the strengths you have in your business.

5. Purpose – When creating a mission for your business, embrace the greater purpose in yourself. In considering online work or at-home work, take the time to understand your passion and how you can tie it to a purpose. If you are passionate about the ways in which your business can affect the general public, you will have something you can do for a long time.

One of the advantages of working from home is, well, being home. It's so convenient, yet it also means that you do …

A Career In Corporate Law

Qualifications

To be a lawyer, one needs to be a qualified in the field of law. To be a graduate in law, it takes four years in undergraduate school and three years’ specialization in law through a law school. In this case, specialization would be in corporate law. To practice law, you need a license. To get the license, you first need to pass the bar exam – an examination that will test your knowledge, character and attitude. After the test, students are then recruited by law firms.

Junior Corporate Associate

As a junior corporate lawyer, you will be learning things the hard way. As a junior corporate associate, you have to do the grunt work of organizing documents, faxing, proofreading, copying, scheduling meetings, etc. In addition to these, the junior associate also has various other duties. These duties can be classified into various categories such as drafting contracts and conducting reviews, preparing filings, due diligence and writing of memoranda. A lot of a junior associates’ time is spend doing research work. A lot of trial and error work goes on into drafting contracts, security disclosure statements and corporate resolutions – and these are things that are not necessarily taught in law school. The junior associate, at times, has to spend a lot of time proofreading.

A law firm may later offer a junior associate the role of a partner. This involves working on individual projects and having junior associates working for you. So to be a good corporate leader, you will need to be hard working, diligent and possess excellent problem solving skills. A corporate lawyer gets paid extremely well, but the job it involves a lot of hard work. Many corporate attorneys work in excess of 60 hours a week.

What Does A Corporate Lawyer Do?

A corporate lawyer mostly works in the legal department of a business, as a legal advisor. Their work includes dealing with issues of taxes, employee rights, amalgamations, mergers and acquisitions. In short, a corporate lawyer has to ensure the legality of commercial transactions. There are other types of practice a corporate lawyer could undertake, and not all lawyers do the same type of job. Some provide advice on legal or/and non-legal issues to the corporation. In this area, the work of a corporate lawyer starts from the formation a corporation and goes on through the life of the business. Until it is dissolved.

The articles of incorporation of a company (i.e. the documents that deal with the formation of the corporation and the structure of the management, of its internal affairs) are drafted by the corporate lawyer. They also have to investigate the best entity for a particular business (i.e. partnership, limited liability partnership, limited liability companies).

Each corporate lawyer’s duties are different, and this adds to the appeal of the profession. Because each entity has its own set of responsibilities, rights, tax structure and organizational structure, corporate lawyers have to be resourceful and persistent in their work. If this is you, …
