Studies Readiness and Career Choice Mentorship

As a practitioner of holistic human capital development, I believe on being occupied with the study readiness and career choice topic early in any person's life. However, it is surprising that people only engage on this topic at the high school level of the learners. It is as if readiness for studies and career choice becomes only relevant during the transition from high school to the college and university. It is for this reason that we find many learners not ready to choose the line of study that is informed by the ultimate carers that they would like to follow.

My objective is to encourage all the parents, guardians and scholars to engage in this topic early in their schooling journey. Secondly, I would like to highlight the themes that should form the engagement. It is more complex than it looks, and always an emotional topic to handle. Scholars become victims of many fault lines not previously obvious to them.

Timing in handling this transitional topic is a challenge to all the schools. They do not always have insights and necessary information to base their consideration on. Access to information is cost for some, and in most cases their school volunteer guidance officers are not exposed to the latest trends. As a result they wake up very late and end up taking studies and career directions that are not well researched.

The schools and parents are encouraged to invest in mentorship program to support the scholars in their studies and career choices. However, such programs alone are not sufficient. The schools must work together with the various mentors in conceptualizing and designing educational tours to the institutions of higher learning (universities and colleges), attending studies and career fairs, exhibitions, etc.

The interaction between the schools and the industry should be effected in early years of the scholars development. The schools must employ skilled counselors, guidance teachers, and industry liaison officers. Companies must be encouraged to adopt schools under their Corporate Social Responsibility programs and see the scholars through to the universities. Such schools could become scholarship recipients of these companies. Ultimately they would graduate to become their employees. However, the idea here is not for the companies to support schools for their own benefit. This is done for the benefit of the society with the hope that the economy will benefit from an educated people.

We can not disregard the commercialization of the student information activities, like privately organized careers fairs and exhibitions. They occupy the space left by the schools and education authorities. As a result such initiatives are perceived to be for the children of the middle class and the wealthy parents. There is a need for collaboration between private and public organizers. The main objective must be to assist the scholars in their studies and career readiness irrespective of their status in the society.

You should think about what you want to do early on, by judging yourself and the various skills you normally have. It is easy to go to work every day when you love what you are doing for a living. Focus on these natural talents before you go into any industry. Make sure that any industry you choose is an industry that coincides with what you do best.

It may take some time for you to build the career you want. It is important to exercise patience in this matter. If you are still in college and learning the skills you need, you should be paying close attention and studying hard. After all, hard work makes dreams come true!

Concentrate on learning the degree that will let you have the career you really desire. Do not let others sway you in your career goals. If you have been given an opportunity to join an industry that you are good at but do not enjoy, think twice about taking the job. You must weigh all of your options before you get involved in something you will regret.

Your career is a part of you and will take up most of your waking hours. You need to be doing something you consider constructive, productive, and even fun (most of the time). Do not settle for a job or a career because it pays a lot of money unless you are sure you are going to be willing to sacrifice happiness for it. As with everything worthwhile, there is a balance that you need to find in your career.

Your personal skills can take you a long way, depending on how you utilize them. When you discover you have a special talent performing a task, take classes and make that skill even better. Make sure you mention all of your skills that make you unique when you are filling out an application, when you are being interviewed and when you are developing a resume. You should include each skill you believe is relevant to the job you are seeking and will benefit the company overall. You should always be positive about what you can do. Do not downplay your abilities. This is a sign to employers that you may not be as good as you would like to be.

There is a difference between being overconfident and being open about your skills and talents. There is always a polite and proper way to let employers know that you have exceptional skills that they will benefit from if you are hired. It is in both your best interest and the best interest of your future employer that these skills and attributes be conveyed! …

Education and the Complete Individual

Education is something that many have said much about. Most of these are complex or vague. Consider the Greek philosopher Aristotle's saying that education is ' an ornament in prosperity ' and ' a refugee in adversity '. There have been a great many attempts to explain this description, but none have quite succeeded in satisfying my curiosity. Alternately, this is what the English essayist Joseph Addison has to say on education: What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to a human soul. This too, has a great many explanations and illustrations. But does it really tell us what education is? Does it tell us why we need education? Not really, since the concept of the soul is, till date, a shadowy area. So how can we begin to comprehend what everyone claims is essential to life nowdays? To put it simply, education is a process of training our mind so that we can apply it in a field of our choice: which is why we have education not as a single seamless entity, but as a whole made up of various divisions: music education, scientific and technological education, art education, even teacher education!

Education can be considered similar to picking and eating a fruit. Picking a particular fruit on the tree is akin to choosing a field to get an education of. When we bite into it, we get our first taste of the subject. As we chew on the bitten proportion, we begin to understand its various aspects – the tastes, textures, intricacies and complexes of it – and when we are ready to move on to the next portion, we swallow what we have assimilated so far so that it can be used for further application. The tree we get the fruit from is the entire body of past thinkers' teachings and the voice that tells us which fruit to pick is the interpreter of that knowledge: the teacher.

Through the lifelong course of education (no, it's not like school or college which ends after a fixed period of time), we get to know about things that always were, still are and always will be around us, waiting to be recognized and acknowledged . Light plays a central role in education – both literally and metaphorically – for visual inputs are the best learnt and without light – of the sun or electrical – we would be missing out on a whole world of knowledge. In fact, this is where phrases like 'light of knowledge', 'throw light on the matter', 'kept in the dark' and so on came from.

University of Oregon Ducks Mascot Explained

Located in Eugene, Oregon the University of Oregon has a rather unique mascot in the Ducks nickname that is affiliated with all of the athletic programs associated with the school. Quaking fans and a seemingly harmless mascot that bears a striking resemblance to the Disney character Donald Duck are not exactly the types of things that are typically thought of as striking fear into the hearts of conference opponents.

The story behind the origin of the University of Oregon mascot begins in Eugene, Oregon. Located in the coastal county of Lane County the city of Eugene has a metropolitan population that tops 340,000 people. During the era when the school was founded in 1876 a nickname even more unusual than the Ducks was chosen. That strange nickname was the "Webfoots." The curious term given to the first sports team to play for the University of Oregon is said to have been coined by an area sports editor by the name of LH Gregory. Legend states that the inexplicable nickname is in some way tied to early Willamette Valley (Oregon) settlers who ancestors were part of the fishing trade across the country in the state of Massachusetts. Seemingly for lack of a better alternative the nickname stuck for roughly sixty years until a sports reporter in a new generation instituted a shift.

The concept of a Duck mascot was first implemented in the 1930s when a tiny white duck that went by the name Puddles started to make appearances at big games. Puddles the duck was an instant hit with students and faculty alike. The popularity of cartoons in the 1940s ushered in the first drawings of a lovable cartoon image of the University of Oregon mascot.

Student depictions of the adored mascot started showing up in student publications with an increasing likeness to the already established Disney animated creature widely known as Donald Duck. Fortunately for the school and fans alike a sensible agreement to continue using the likeness of Donald Duck was quickly reached. Whereas in the more litigious twenty-first century Disney and the University of Oregon might clash over legal considerations it just so happened that the Oregon athletic director at the time named Leo Harris had a connection with a Disney cartoonist that arranged for Mr. Bush. Harris to sit down with Walt Disney himself and work out an agreement that was sealed with an informal handshake. This infamous handshake would come to a point of contention when Disney Corporation lawyers broached the subject in the 1970s. Occasionally a formal agreement was drafted and signed preventing the continued use of the likeness of Donald Duck in accordance with the wishes of the late Mr. Walt Disney.
