Career Case Study; The Female Executive Officers in Large Corporations

Today, there are more and more female executives making it into the higher ranks and large corporations. We have seen many very large companies such as Hewlett-Packard with female presidents. We see more and more female vice presidents and board members in today's modern corporations and this is a good thing.

Most female executive officers have accepted that although things are changing, they are changing slowly. They realize for the most part corporations are somewhat of a man's world, but over time this will change completely and that is obvious. As a man, of course, yes I totally understand that. I realize how the real world works.

The glass ceiling is alive and well and well it is unfortunate. Actually it has been my opinion that women do a better job in many regards and aspects of business. Again that is a stereotype, but it has been my observation. I had recently met the former President of an Atlantic City Casino at a pool party in NJ, she was pretty much forced to resign, but had really bought the casino back up to speed during her reign.

I have another friend she was President of the American Cancer Society in LA and I have yet another acquaintance who was the first woman Regional VP of Hyatt and I met the President of Pacific Telephone in San Francisco many years back who ran that organization too. Yes I see all these issues and know some super duper women who kick butt and are Presidents of many great companies around this nation.

Business executives and corporate board members need to know that they need to pick the best person for the job. If that person is a woman then that is the person who needs to be in control, take responsibility and assume that position. The glass ceiling needs to be broken and let the best person win. Please consider this in 2006. …

Epstein Barr Treatment – 7 Common Mistakes People Make When Recovering From Epstein Barr Virus

There are 7 common mistakes that people make when treating the Epstein Barr virus that causes mononucleosis or glandular fever. These mistakes can slow your recovery and in some cases lead to secondary infections like strep throat, pneumonia, sinus infection or chronic fatigue syndrome. Let’s have a look at each of these mistakes in more detail:

Mistake 1 – Not resting your body

The most common mistake people make is not resting when they are first diagnosed with the Epstein Barr virus. Mononucleosis symptoms can include fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands, muscle aches, headaches, nausea and sometimes fever. Despite these debilitating symptoms some people try and struggle on and keep going to work, school or college, running a household, rushing around after their family. There is no way you will make a fast and complete recovery from Epstein Barr if you don’t stop and rest your body.

Mistake 2 – Not getting adequate sleep

Carrying on from this first mistake is the second mistake – not getting enough sleep. Your body specifically needs good quality sleep when recovering from Epstein Barr. When you are asleep your body produces a hormone called growth hormone, which is your body’s repair hormone. Lack of sleep and going to bed too late (after about 11 p.m.) will result in your body making less growth hormone.

To ensure you are asleep by 11 p.m. and you get a good night’s sleep, make sure you are not watching TV, playing computer, drinking caffeine, doing work or rushing around before bedtime. Get into a routine of relaxing before bed. Having a warm bath, reading quietly in bed, meditating, doing yoga or enjoying a chamomile tea are all good ideas you can try.

Mistake 3 – Lack of adequate water

Now the third mistake, and this is probably the most common mistake I see in my patients, is not drinking enough water to flush out the Epstein Barr virus and toxins from your body. Your aim should be to be drinking at least 8 glasses of fluid a day. Fluids can include pure water, herb teas, lemon in hot water, broths, soups and freshly squeezed vegetable juices. Your fluids should not include tea, coffee, soft drinks or alcohol which will just dehydrate you and make you feel worse.

In some people with mononucleosis, the throat can get really sore and inflamed which makes it hard to swallow. In these cases a hot lemon and honey tea can help soothe the throat and make drinking easier. Alternatively sucking on ice cubes can numb the pain and get the fluids into your body.

Mistake 4 – Eating the wrong foods

One of the cheapest and simplest ways to treat Epstein Barr is with good healthy foods. How well your immune system functions is directly linked to what you eat. If you eat all the wrong foods like sugar, white flour products, processed foods, alcohol, coffee and excess fats then there is no way you are going to make a good …

Functional Resume – Writing a Resume for a Career Change

Looking to move up or move out? Tired of the same old routine? Looking for a change?

Then a functional resume format could be your ticket to a new career.

You’ve spent the last 10-years as an elementary teacher, but have found your passion in sales. You’ve taken night classes on sales & marketing and have even dabbled in direct marketing during the summer months with a surprising degree of success. Best of all your success has not gone unnoticed and the CEO of XYZ Incorporated has offered to hire you as a sales manager for a new territory.

The problem is you’re scheduled for an interview and you want your resume to accurately reflect your skills & qualifications. If you follow tradition or use the most popular resume format then you’d be writing your resume in a chronological fashion. However, this type of resume would only highlight your teaching experience and career progression, which isn’t what you want. You want the employer to focus on your skills & qualifications that relate directly to the sales manager position. This is exactly what the functional resume is designed to do.

What is a functional resume?

The functional resume groups your qualifications and experience around skills rather than job titles as in the chronological format. Instead of listing your employment history in sequential order the functional resume categorizes your skills by function allowing you to emphasize your abilities. You can tie a variety of job experiences to the ones needed for a particular job by arranging your qualifications around skills.

The key to writing an effective functional resume is to identify three or four skills that are required for the job. These skills will be used as headings in which you can identify three to five specific examples to demonstrate that ability. Arrange the headings in order of importance. Examples of skill sets relevant to a sales career may include: customer service, management, sales, planning, etc. Do a search for free functional resume samples and use them as guides in stimulating your creativity. Functional resume samples make excellent guides when writing your own resume.

Many employers still frown upon the functional resume format, as the perception is it is too easy to cover up employment gaps (explain them in your cover letter). However, this trend is changing as job seekers learn to write effective resumes that accurately link their skills to the employer’s needs. The key for job seekers is to place a short work history in reverse chronological order at the end of their resume. Include only employment dates, titles, and company names.

You don’t have to be stuck in the same old career. Review your current skill set, see what other careers have similar functions, then create a functional resume around those skill sets and start your new career!…

Writing Your College Essay – 5 Tips to Success

A great college application essay paintings a picture about who you really are so that the admissions officer gets to know more about you. Your essay is a way for you to elaborate on your application and it is your chance to set yourself apart from other applicants. Admission essays are also a way to show the reader that you can organize your thoughts to write clearly and effectively.

Here are 5 tips for writing your college essay:

Tip # 1
Stay Focused:

Your goal in writing your essay is to prove a point – that you are the best candidate for this school. Make sure that you stay focused so that the reader will be able to stay focused. Someone else should easily be able to read and follow your essay from the beginning and all the way up until the end. Remember the fastest way from point A to pint B is by heading there in a straight line. By being careful, clear and organized in your writing your essay will reflect who you really are so that the college will want to have you as part of their freshmen class.

Tip # 2
Provide Evidence:

Once you have provided the main idea for your essay, you will then need to provide evidence that supports it. Give specific examples, quotes, and reasons that support your main idea. Do not get carried away with providing too many supporting facts, but do not be in a position where you do not provide sufficient support to your main idea to prove it either.

Tip # 3
Be specific:

Use specific examples to paint a vivid picture of your supporting evidence and details. Try not to be too generic or use clich├ęs.

While this is a good sentence: "I want to study medicine so that I can become a pediatrician."

Tip # 4
Do not be predictable:

Remember that colleges read thousands of these essays every year. Do not write about what you think they want to hear. Choose a topic that is unique and that sets you apart from the 999 other essays they are going to read on the same day that they read yours. This is not the time to try and blend in with the crowd.

Tip # 5
It's not a resume:

Your application essay is not a chance for you to reiterate everything that is already listed on your application application. It is also not a list of your accomplishment, achievements and awards. Your essay is your chance to show the reader that you have the ability to organize your thoughts clearly into words, sentences, paragraphs and extremely an essay. It is also your chance to differentiate yourself from your competition. It should highlight your most prominent awards and …

Stop Allowing Your Negative Outlook To Sabotage Your Life And Career

I have seen it repeatedly; people allowing their negative outlook on life to sabotage their lives and careers. When you allow a negative frame of mind to dictate the outcome of your life you allow yourself to miss out on the best things in life. Also, by having a negative outlook can destroy close relationships which in turn can sabotage your career advancement opportunities. Here are some key points that may prevent you from throwing your career away by not allowing your negativity to destroy or sabotage your life and/or career.

Don’t let your negativity make you feel as if you are inferior to your working associates. Never put yourself down. Never think that you got your position due to being lucky. Never think that you are way out of your league when going up against your competition. Always know that people are people and nothing more. All people put their pants on one leg at a time. Always know that if it is possible for someone else that it is possible for you to. Never allow anyone to own the definition of who you are; only you know that.

There are things that you will want to take away from what I just shared with you. Treat these different scenarios as stepping stones of higher consciousness to learn something new. Despite everything, you have probably contributed many things to your fellow co-worker’s ideas and/or projects that someone else wouldn’t have been able to come up with. So, learn to pat yourself on the back and learn to love yourself.

You will want to avoid assembling with the negative entities that you presently toil with from day to day. Let your negative coworkers stew in their own misery. Stay as far away from them as possible. And always remember that pain is inevitable but being miserable is a choice. Studies conducted have found that witnessing insolence in the morning can disrupt and/or sabotage the rest of the day. Know that, you don’t have to let this sort of thing happen in the first place.

Now, it comes a time when you have to let your coworkers deal with their own sentiments in their own way. Make it a point to steer clear of other peoples’ negativity. You must learn to stop adopting other peoples’ problems. Lets’ face it, we all have problems, but we don’t have to overload our plate with additional problems that don’t have any positive bearing on our lives whatsoever. Never bite off more than you can chew. You will be better off for doing so.

If you want to change your negative outlook on life to positive you will want to learn to count your blessings and remember all that you have to be thankful for. Being truly grateful and thankful for living in such a great country as the United States is truly a blessing in itself. And always know that when you think you have it bad, someone else has got it worse. So, …
